Voters back tight school budgets

ADDISON COUNTY — Addison County voters on Town Meeting Day followed a statewide trend in endorsing the vast majority of their 2010-2011 local school budgets, with Bridport standing out as the lone education spending plan to fall at the polls.

Midd votes out tax on equipment

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury residents at their town meeting on Monday resoundingly approved their municipal budget, then went to the polls the next day to elect a new selectman and eliminate the community’s machinery and equipment (M&E) tax over the course of the next six years.

Brandon OKs bond for police headquarters

BRANDON — Voters in Brandon overwhelmingly approved a $395,000 bond for a new police station, and they approved all other items on their Town Meeting Day warning, as well.

The town budget, the Neshobe School budget and 13 other articles on the ballot were all given the green light by the Brandon voting public.

Officials said 888 Brandon residents turned out to vote on Town Meeting Day, which is roughly 45 percent of those on the town checklist.

Chile earthquake sparks family fears

MIDDLEBURY — Early on Saturday morning, the second large earthquake to rock the Western Hemisphere in as many months hit just off the coast of Chile.

Here in Middlebury, the time was 1:34 a.m. For some, the remainder of the night became sleepless.

“I got a phone call on Saturday morning at 4 a.m.,” said Jeff Cason, the Dean of International Studies at Middlebury College.

UD-3 residents back facilities work

MIDDLEBURY — Voters in the UD-3 school district on Feb. 23 agreed to spend $400,000 in a budget fund balance on various capital improvements to the Middlebury Union high school and middle school campuses, including replacing the Doc Collins football field lights.

Flooring business eyeing MVAA building

MIDDLEBURY — A local businessman is seeking permission to acquire the soon-to-be-former Middlebury Volunteer Ambulance Association (MVAA) headquarters at 19 Elm St. and convert it into a floor covering store and carpet-cleaning business.

The Middlebury Development Review Board on March 8 will formally hear David Babcock’s business plan for the property, which includes a 2,100-square-foot main building and a cupola-adorned carriage barn.

Bixby's requests backed

VERGENNES — Residents in four of the communities that Bixby Free Memorial Library serves agreed on Tuesday to make substantial increases in their towns’ yearly contributions to the Vergennes library, the first time towns have upped their annual ante since 2002.

In all, Addison, Ferrisburgh, Panton and Waltham will add about $17,600 to their annual contributions during their upcoming fiscal year, to a total of  about $51,200.

Skihaus returns under new owners

MIDDLEBURY — Skihaus is back.

Long-time employees of the Alpine Shop, Barb Nelson and Anna Boisvert, closed on the purchase of the prominent Main Street business last Friday morning and by mid-afternoon sold their first items under their new name: Skihaus of Vermont.

New commander takes helm at local VSP barracks

NEW HAVEN — Stepping into his new position as the commander at the Vermont State Police barracks in New Haven last week, Lt. Gary Genova’s career came full circle.

The 47-year-old began his career with the VSP more than 20 years ago at the former Middlebury barracks just down the road. An Addison County resident, Genova said he’s pleased to return to the barracks where his career with the state police started, and looks forward to reviving his partnerships with longstanding public safety officials in the region.
