ADDISON — New York and Vermont transportation officials on Friday afternoon closed the Champlain Bridge because of safety concerns.

The move was taken after experts inspecting the 80-year-old span that links Addison, Vt., with Crown Point, N.Y., found a structural support that worried them.

“It was their decision to close it,” said John Zicconi, Vermont Agency of Transportation Director of Planning, Outreach and Community Affairs. Officials said two of the piers are deficient.

MIDDLEBURY — Addressing a crowd of around 50 farmers Monday night at the Middlebury American Legion, Sen. MIDDLEBURY — A local nonprofit will soon launch a competition in which the winner will be the one to have accomplished the least.

Sounds strange? Yes — until one realizes that the participants’ objective is to consume the least amount of energy possible.

And that’s exactly what 15 local businesses have pledged to do during the next three months as part of “Middlebury Unplugged,” a challenge organized by the Vermont Community Foundation (VCF).
