BRISTOL — The Bristol selectboard on Monday, April 26, awarded the contract for the renovation of Holley Hall to Brandon-based Naylor & Breen Builders, who came in with the low bid for the project at $614,000.

Bristol voters approved the town to borrow up to $750,000 for the repairs in a December bond vote. The repairs will make the building more handicap accessible, fix structural and wiring problems, add insulation and reorganize the basement town offices.

The repairs will include:

Bridport school budget revote set

Posted on May 3, 2010 |
By John Flowers

BRIDPORT — Bridport residents will return to the polls this Tuesday, May 4, to cast votes on a proposed 2010-2011 elementary school budget that is $6,158 leaner than the spending plan that was defeated by less than 10 votes on Town Meeting Day.

Voters rejected the original spending plan of $1,336,975 by a 179-172 tally. It proved to be one of the few school budget defeats in the state but was the second year in a row that Bridport residents had rejected their elementary spending plan.

BRISTOL — A Bristol couple looking to revitalize a Main Street business is overhauling Reed’s Auto Supply and hoping to draw customers to Bristol’s downtown.

The new Forand’s Auto Supply, owned by husband-and-wife team Cathleen and Eric Forand, opened in March. For the Forands, purchasing the store previously owned by Mike Reed offered the chance to work close to home, realize their dream of owning a small business, and improve a longstanding storefront on Bristol’s main drag.

MIDDLEBURY — This summer there will be fewer vegetables growing on Exchange Street.

The steering committee of the Middlebury Area Community Garden (MACG) recently found out that it would no longer be able to use land behind the Otter Creek Brewing plant off Exchange Street for garden plots, due to ongoing construction and renovation at the brewery.

Goshen battles rival for top blueberry billing

Posted on May 3, 2010 |
By John Flowers

MONTPELIER — Lawmakers are used to having Statehouse smack-downs over resources, committee assignments and leadership positions.

But over blueberry bragging rights?

Actually, you can call it a friendly food fight, strictly tongue-in-cheek, pitting the Deerfield Valley against tiny Goshen.

It’s a little comic relief amid the chaos of more pressing financial issues during the waning days of the 2010 legislative session.

The full sentence for Lowe, 51, on that charge called for 1-2 years, but Corsones suspended all but six months of it.

MIDDLEBURY — Ask Cheryl Connor and her husband, Jerry, about their decision to hire farmworkers from Mexico, and the Connors will tell you a story that begins 20 years ago — with a dream.

It was an unexpected dream for Jerry, a Bridport dairyman and third-generation farmer. Though he had no ties at the time to Mexico, he’d dreamt clearly of Our Lady of Guadalupe, the celebrated Catholic icon of the Virgin Mary held dear by Mexican Catholics.

VERGENNES — The mortal remains of John Collette have been buried beneath a simple headstone in St. Peter’s Cemetery in Vergennes since soon after his death of a heart attack at age 46 on July 17, 1932.

But a fortuitous discovery by an amateur historian is allowing Vermonters to learn the rest of Collette’s story, a story that will allow him to have his name posthumously etched on a far more elaborate monument — the National Law Enforcement Memorial in Washington, D.C.

New hydro valuations could boost tax rates

Posted on April 29, 2010 |
By John Flowers

MIDDLEBURY — Members of the Vermont House Ways and Means Committee on Wednesday were considering steps to pre-empt a major devaluation in utilities’ hydro-power facilities statewide, something that would result in new assessments that could substantially reduce grand lists — and therefore boost property tax rates — in six Addison County towns.

For the purpose of levying property taxes, hydro facilities are currently reassessed annually based on an income analysis that takes into account the wholesale cost of power.
