Salisbury man held in sex felony case

SALISBURY — An Addison County Superior Court judge has ordered a Salisbury man held without bail as he prepares to answer to a count of  aggravated sexual assault and kidnapping, stemming from allegations filed against him this past spring by a former live-in girlfriend.

Vergennes seeks input on city plan

VERGENNES — Vergennes residents on Monday will have a chance to learn more about and weigh in on a new municipal plan that city officials are calling an update to the 2009 plan, not a rewrite.

The city planning commission has set a public hearing on the updated plan at 7 p.m. on Monday, June 30, in the Vergennes fire department basement meeting room.

Planning commission chairman Shannon Haggett handed a two-page summary of proposed changes to the Vergennes City Council on June 17, and that summary will be available at Monday’s meeting.

State Sens. Ayer and Bray unopposed for re-election

ADDISON COUNTY — Incumbent State Sens. Claire Ayer, D-Addison, and Christopher Bray, D-New Haven, are unopposed in their re-election bids for the two Senate seats representing Addison County, Huntington and Buel’s Gore.

That news became clear following the June 12 filing deadline for candidates vying for the Vermont Senate and many other offices.

Vermont Gas, Shoreham sign Memorandum of Understanding

SHOREHAM — Vermont Gas Systems and the Shoreham selectboard announced on Thursday that they had agreed on a Memorandum of Understanding related to the Addison-Rutland Natural Gas Project, a natural gas pipeline that would run through the town.

The agreement sets conditions about how and where the natural gas transmission line can be built and mandates emergency training and safety measures.

350VT urges cyclists to bike throughout July

BURLINGTON — 350 Vermont (350VT) presents its second annual summer bike challenge, Just Bike. The month-long event challenges Vermonters to commit to “just biking” for the month of July while raising money for climate action.

Just Bike celebrates a low-impact lifestyle and grassroots organization. Participants commit a biking goal and solicit support from their family and friends.

VUHS student delivers winning speech

VERGENNES — The Vergennes Lions Club has had a very busy winter and spring, donating thousands of dollars to area organizations and individuals. In order to do this, the club holds various raffles and asks area businesses for assistance. Club President Shanon Atkins said that if it weren’t for the area businesses the Lions wouldn’t be able to help all those that they do now.

ACTR bus drivers narrowly turn down union

MIDDLEBURY — Addison County Transit Resources bus drivers on June 11 voted 9-8 against unionizing through Teamsters Local 597.

Nadine Barnicle, community relations manager for ACTR, said the organization is committed to working with the drivers to resolve any issues that prompted them to take a union vote.

“We’re really confident we can all work together,” Barnicle said.

Teamsters Local 597 spokesman Tony St. Hilaire did not immediately return a phone call seeking comment.

Mount Abraham facilities committee makes progress

BRISTOL — The Mount Abraham Union High/Middle School Facility Advisory Committee met on June 11 to discuss the future of the school building. 

A spokesman for the group said it was a great start to the process of engaging the community in considering the condition of our Middle and High School and how we might invest in its improvement.
