Testing shows Vermont students near top

MONTPELIER — Vermont’s fourth- and eighth-graders scored among the best in the nation on the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) tests of reading and mathematics, the Vermont Agency of Education announced this week. However, the test scores also showed that across the country students living in poverty lag behind their more affluent peers, including in Vermont.

Local duo records in Nashville

MIDDLEBURY — Two local musicians who took part in a marathon recording session in the capital of country music earlier this year are putting the final touches on a new Christmas album.

For a week in March, Matt Dickerson of Bristol and Susan Nop of Middlebury spent 12 hours a day in four different studios in Nashville, Tenn., known as the Mecca of country music.

Police look for missing Ripton man

RIPTON — Vermont State Police are asking for help from the public in finding a Ripton man who is missing.

Police on Monday received a report that James Daignault, 54, was missing.

Daignault was seen on Saturday, Nov. 23, at approximately 10 a.m. when he was leaving his residence in Ripton en route to a food shelf in Burlington. He never returned.

Contractors compete for Middlebury tunnel work

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury officials on Nov. 19 interviewed three New York-based companies competing for the right to serve as general contractor for the upcoming replacement of the downtown railroad overpasses on Merchants Row and Main Street.

The three companies in the running include:

•  Harrison & Burrowes Bridge Constructors Inc. of Glenmont, N.Y.

•  Tetra Tech Construction of Gloversville, N.Y.

State confronted with budget challenges

MONTPELIER (AP) — The growing numbers of pre-trial detainees in Vermont prisons and paying sheriffs to monitor mentally ill patients in hospital emergency rooms are among the many budget pressures facing Vermont state government.

That word came Wednesday as officials with the administration of Gov. Peter Shumlin briefed lawmakers on the budget challenges they’re expected to face when they return in January.

ANESU looks for new business manager

BRISTOL — The Addison Northeast Supervisory Union is looking for a new business manager, the district said on its website. The current Chief Financial Officer is Ed Gomeau.

The chief financial officer oversees a staff of six, reports directly to the superintendent, and oversees $27 million in expenditures annually, the job posting stated. When reached for comment, district data and communications specialist Karen Wheeler declined to say when or why Gomeau was leaving, though the job posting said the new contract start date is Jan. 15, 2014.
