Brandon police responding to increased mental health incidents

BRANDON — There was a recurring item in the Brandon Police Log this spring. 

“Mental Health Issue, Triangle Court. Subject transported by Brandon Area Rescue to Rutland Regional Medical Center.”

Brandon police and BARS were often called to the same residence on Triangle Court off McConnell Road two or three times a week.

College's chief financial officer heading to Tulane

MIDDLEBURY — After 13 years as chief financial officer and head of operations at Middlebury College, Patrick Norton has accepted the position of chief operating officer at Tulane University in New Orleans. Norton has been an active member of both the Middlebury College and town communities, serving as a long-time member of the Porter Medical Center board.

Laurie L. Patton, president of Middlebury College, announced Norton’s departure in late May to college faculty and staff, thanking him for his contributions over the years.

Charlotte Rt. 7 work beginning this week

CHARLOTTE — As work now is starting in earnest this week to pave Route 7 between Middlebury and New Haven Junction, another Route 7 project is also beginning that will have an impact on those who head north to Chittenden County from Addison County. 

This week, contractors were starting to lay the groundwork for a rebuild of a roughly three-mile stretch of Route 7 that runs from the Ferrisburgh-Charlotte town line northward. Some traffic delays are expected, although as part of the project two-lane detours are planned.

Judge fines Brandon farmers, orders them to fix manure pit

BRANDON — A Rutland Superior Court judge has ordered Brandon dairy farmers William and Robin Hanfield to fix an overflowing manure pit and pay a $24,750 fine for violating Vermont’s water pollution laws and agricultural practice regulations.

Young adventurers tackling the Long Trail

RIPTON — Over the last two summers, four hearty Ripton kids have trekked a whopping total of 84 miles on the Long Trail, finishing at the Canadian Border.

They reached the northern terminus of the trail in North Troy on June 27. The 8-12-year-old mountaineers are looking to finish the trail in the coming summers.

FERRISBURGH — At the annual meeting of the Rogers and Hazard Relief Society on June 14, the following new officers were elected: Karlene DeVine, president; Art Cohn, vice president; Sally Torrey, secretary; and Shelly Eriksen, treasurer. One director is elected at Town Meeting each year for a two year position. Pennie Beach was elected beginning 2016. Other members are Kim Hornung-Marcy, Anna Husk and Liz Markowski.

Since that time, gathering wild edibles has become increasingly popular, and in our region, woods-grown delicacies such as ramps and fiddlehead ferns appear in grocery stores each spring. Yet you don’t have to lace up your hiking boots to enjoy the wild repast. If you resist the urge to use herbicides, you are likely to find a diverse array of edible wild plants growing in your lawn and vegetable garden.

Starksboro man drowns while helping to save his son

FERRISBURGH — A 36-year-old Starksboro man died on Thursday morning, July 7, at the University of Vermont Medical Center as a result of a July 6 swimming incident while trying to rescue his son in the waters of Lake Champlain at Button Bay State Park.

Vermont State Police said Jason Russell died at around 4 a.m.

State police responded to Button Bay State Park at around 5 p.m. on Wednesday after receiving a call about a boy having trouble swimming.
