Couple questions effort to raise money on behalf of sick former Marine

BRISTOL — First and foremost, Bristol resident John Shepard, a former U.S. Marine with terminal cancer, and his girlfriend Hillary Provoncha are grateful for the support their acquaintances have shown by donating about $3,800 to a website set up to fund Shepard’s daughter’s attempt to take him on a trip to North Carolina or buy him a boat so they may go fishing together.

Ferrisburgh determines dog kennel does not violate zoning

FERRISBURGH — Town officials determined last week that a dog shelter operating out of a Sand Road residence does not constitute a violation of zoning ordinances.

Ferrisburgh Zoning Administrator Ken Wheeling said Heidi’s Haven Rescue, a state-certified dog shelter operated by Sheila McGregor out of her home, does not run afoul of town statutes.

Fire destroys Bristol barn on a bitterly cold evening

BRISTOL — A Saturday evening fire destroyed a barn on Choiniere Road in Bristol and required scores of firefighters to extinguish. The barn was owned by the Choiniere family, who until 2012 operated a dairy farm on the property for decades.

Local hunter heads west for success

HERRON, Mont. — Whiting resident Scott LaDuc came back from a recent trip to Montana with a lot more than photos of the beautiful scenery — he returned with a hunting story and the meat of an 8-point deer.

LaDuc began hunting when he was 10 years old; he was taught by his family in Whiting, a group of people who have always loved the sport.

On this past Nov. 23, all of those years spent hunting paid off while on a hunt in Herron, Mont.

ID-4 board chair leaves town office steering committee

MIDDLEBURY — One prominent member of the Middlebury Town Office/Recreation Facility Project Steering Committee was missing from last Tuesday’s meeting of the committee: ID-4 school board chair Ruth Hardy.

On Jan. 4, Hardy resigned from the committee, saying that her presence on the body was no longer needed. She represented ID-4, which owns the land where a new town gym originally had been proposed. But since the Middlebury selectboard voted last month to favor a site off Creek Road instead, Hardy said she was not needed on the committee.

MIDDLEBURY — In a stunning and unexpected move, Middlebury selectboard Vice Chairman Victor Nuovo resigned from his position on Jan. 2, the same day on which he and his colleagues were slated to discuss a conflict of interest complaint that had been lodged against him by a group of local citizens.

ANeSU outsources substitute teacher hiring

BRISTOL — Addison Northeast Supervisory Union expects to save district administrators’ time and increase efficiency by hiring a third-party business to manage substitute teachers in the Bristol-area schools, but some current and former substitutes have expressed concern about the plan’s effectiveness.

The district has hired Kelly Services, a company that specializes in temporary staffing nationwide. The new contract will begin in February.

ANeSU Superintendent David Adams said the new service will bring more substitutes into the district.
