Update: McKibben spends the weekend in D.C. jail cell

Update (8/25/11):

WASHINGTON, D.C. — From where he sits — behind bars in a Washington, D.C., jail cell — everything is going according to plan for Bill McKibben.

The environmental author and activist was arrested on Saturday, Aug. 20, in Washington while protesting the proposed construction of a 1,700-mile pipeline that would pump oil from the Tar Sands of Alberta, Canada, to oil refineries in Texas. He was one of 70 arrests on Saturday.

Ashley steps down from Middlebury selectboard

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury Selectwoman Janelle Ashley has stepped down from her post because her family is moving to the town of Whiting.

“I will miss being such a central part of what’s happening in the Middlebury community,” Ashley said on Wednesday as she was packing up belongings at her Middlebury home.

Bristol residents spar over business park

BRISTOL — The future of the Bristol Works business campus hangs in limbo as Bristol town officials grapple with an official zoning classification for the property.

Owners of the property at the corner of Bristol’s Munsill Avenue and Pine Street plan to use the 5.5-acre site to host a range of uses, including office space for the Addison Northeast Supervisory Union, a prospective health center, and manufacturing space for energy technology and value-added food products.

Addy Indy beginning a new era

MIDDLEBURY — And so an era ends. After 31 years at the Addison Independent, 28 of which she served as advertising manager, Jane Spencer will bid adieu at the end of this week and take on a newly created role as library director of the Bixby Library in Vergennes.

Treleven embraces education

NEW HAVEN — Craggy hillsides surround the pond and a meadow of grazing sheep at Treleven Farm in New Haven, sheltering the small valley off Route 17 from the outside world.

The farm has welcomed all sorts of visitors over the years, but now Cheryl and Don Mitchell, owners of the farm and founding board members of the educational nonprofit Treleven, are refocusing their efforts inviting people in to learn and teach.

Bristol selectboard deals with many issues

BRISTOL —HUB Teen Center Director Jim Lockridge and Americorps volunteer Heather Simpson presented research about teens in the five-town area to the Bristol selectboard at its Monday meeting.  

“What we presented last night was mostly research about the teen demographic in the area. It’s from reports that were gathered and referenced.” said Lockridge on Tuesday.

Weybridge eyes school's future

WEYBRIDGE — Weybridge residents on Sept. 13 will gather for the first of several upcoming community forums to offer their views on how their local elementary school should be governed and managed during a future that will likely be marked by continuing low enrollment.

The meeting will be the first in a series of discussions in all seven Addison Central Supervisory Union towns on whether the district should consider consolidating its governance structure and/or more effectively share resources in acknowledgment of growing expenses and fewer students.

On the hunt for ash borer

ADDISON COUNTY — With the invasive emerald ash borer knocking at the door, Vermont’s ash tree population is in grave danger of being wiped out.

But if scientists and forest workers can identify the insect early enough, the profitable hardwoods might still have a fighting chance — by using the paralyzing powers of a native wasp to serve as an early warning system.
