State board receives school unification plan from ANeSU

BRISTOL — The finalized plan for unifying governance and budgeting among all six schools in the Addison Northeast Supervisory Union is now before the Vermont State Board of Education, which is expected to review the plan at its Sept. 20 meeting in St. Johnsbury.

If approved by the state board, the plan will come before the voters of Bristol, Lincoln, Monkton, New Haven and Starksboro on Nov. 8 for their decision.

Community Players to audition kids for holiday show

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury Community Players “Foundations” will hold auditions for their annual holiday show, “The Nutcracker’s Adventure” on Saturday, Sept. 10, from 9:30 a.m.-noon at Middlebury Union High School Auditorium. Registration is from 9-9:30 a.m.

Featuring Tchaikovsky’s well-known holiday music, this play will be a fun musical dramatic portrayal of the story. The cast calls for children ages 7-17, as well as two men and two women. (Parents, come and play with your kids!) All will learn a song and a dance.

Town of Middlebury 'fires' project engineer

MIDDLEBURY — The town of Middlebury has cut ties with an engineering firm that local officials said exhibited “a pattern of overpromising and under-delivering” on services — thus far for payment amounting to $3,048,539 — to lay the groundwork for the upcoming replacement of the downtown Main Street and Merchants Row rail bridges.

Rokeby talk to present history behind Quaker meetinghouses

FERRISBURGH — Historic Quaker meetinghouses are iconic pieces of American architecture. Join the Rokeby Museum on Sunday, Sept. 11, at 3 p.m., when Catherine Lavoie examines Quakers’ paradoxical attitudes toward their houses of worship. Lavoie conducted a survey of meetinghouses associated with the Pennsylvania Yearly Meeting and uses the 154 structures as a case study.

Vermont leads the nation on immunization

BURLINGTON — Vermont tops the nation in chicken pox vaccinations, according to newly published results from the 2015 National Immunization Survey for Teens (NIS-Teen), but there is more work to be done to ensure all Vermont teens are protected against cancer-causing human papillomavirus (HPV).

Outside Story: Karner blues butterflies making a comeback

The Karner blue, New Hampshire’s state butterfly, is a wisp of a thing, a tiny fluttering of silvery-blue wings. Unless you happen to be wandering through a pine barren or black-oak savannah, however, you’re unlikely to spot one. Even then, it would be a challenge, as the butterflies have been listed as federally endangered since 1992.
