Vergennes to recieve planning help

VERGENNES — Vergennes City Council members and planning commission chairman Shannon Haggett at this past Tuesday’s council meeting discussed the city’s recent award by Vermont Council on Rural Development of free facilitation for a four-month public-forum process that will be offered either next spring or fall. City Manager Mel Hawley said Vergennes was one of two Vermont towns to earn the honor for 2013.

Vergennes police chief updates drug fighting efforts

VERGENNES — Vergennes Police Chief George Merkel spoke to the Vergennes Lions at their meeting on Dec. 4. He commented that he is working with “some of the best police officers he has ever known.” He commented that they work hard and take offenses personally, trying hard to solve whatever crime has taken place. He said there are 10 officers (six full-time and four part-time) plus one dog in the department. He said a number of his officers are course instructors for many different aspects of police work.

CVAA offers Tai Chi classes

VERMONT — CVAA has announced the schedule for its winter schedule Tai Chi for Arthritis classes. Classes are offered at no charge and are open to adults age 50 and over. Tai chi can help seniors stay independent and take control of their health, as well as improve balance, muscle strength, breathing, agility, energy levels and mood.

Bears dont lose bone mass: research may benefit humans

Deep in the winter-dark woods, beneath the roots of a fallen tree, a mother black bear hibernates with her two yearling cubs. In the spring, they will wake up in near-starvation condition, their fat reserves depleted. The mother bear’s bones, however, will be as strong and as thick as the day she lay down, and her young may even have added bone mass over the winter.

MUMS teams, teachers back in UD-3's proposed budget

MIDDLEBURY — The UD-3 school board has given its unanimous approval to a proposed 2014-2015 spending plan of $17,064,779 for Middlebury Union middle and high schools.

That is a budget that reflects an overall 2.89 percent spending increase compared to this year and allows MUMS to maintain a four-team teaching structure.

Starksboro man irked with health care website

STARKSBORO — The struggles of a Starksboro man in trying to navigate the Vermont Health Connect website are a snapshot of what the Shumlin administration faces while implementing the state’s new health care platform.

Jeff Keeney first attempted to sign up for health insurance for his family in early November, and he still hasn’t been able to complete his application. Exasperated, he fired off an email to Gov. Shumlin last week and copied a number of local lawmakers.

Design picked for Kidspace replacement
