Middlebury Actors Workshop stages 'Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde'

PLAY PREVIEW: Are human beings good or evil? Can civilization or science ever tame the worst in us? In Middlebury Actors Workshop’s latest production opening next week at Town Hall Theater in Middlebury, set in Victorian London, we meet Dr. Henry Jekyll, a gentleman scientist who has left his practice to pursue that burning question. His solution, which makes him the world’s first psycho-pharmacologist, launches a tense and fast-moving drama.

Middlebury Police Log: Minor incidents keep force busy

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police responded on Oct. 8 to a report about a youth who had passed out after smoking marijuana, and was now acting aggressively at a Seymour Street residence. Middlebury Regional EMS took the youth to Porter Hospital.

In other action last week, Middlebury police:

•  Assisted Vermont State Police with a vehicle-deer collision on Route 116 in Bristol on Oct. 6.

Seed oil company germinates in Middlebury

MIDDLEBURY — It began with an idea and some initiative.

Now it’s about to become a well-oiled machine.

The founders of Full Sun Co. confirmed last week their signing of a lease with local businessman Tony Neri to occupy the former home of Vermont Soap at 616 Exchange St. in Middlebury. Plans call for that new enterprise to soon churn out thousands of gallons of non-GMO — and eventually organic — sunflower and canola oils for use in a variety of cooking preparations.

ANwSU picks new business manager

VERGENNES — Addison Northwest Supervisory Union, beset by financial woes since the Vermont Agency of Education earlier this year said it would withhold funds because of “very weak” bookkeeping and many accounting problems, has taken another step toward putting the school district on firm financial ground.

Superintendent JoAn Canning announced on Monday that Windsor Northwest business manager Tonia Mears has accepted the business manager position in the Vergennes-area school district, effective Oct. 28.

HEALTH CARE: Government’s role is to protect patient safety, maintain health standards, license providers, insure solvency reserves, and ensure timely access to care. It is governments roll to provide a safety net to those unable to afford healthcare.

What government should not do is to create a multi-billion dollar health care monopoly where patients have no choices, providers are controlled by government and taxpayers assessed staggering new taxes.
