Shoreham coyote hunt spurs anger

SHOREHAM — Some residents of Lapham Bay Road in Shoreham are asking their selectboard to pass a local ordinance regulating coyote hunting in town. They believe that nothing short of a new law will put an end to what they allege have been cases of trespassing and irresponsible shooting that made them feel unsafe on their own property.

State officials, meanwhile, said a local law would not supersede current Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department regulations that allow for coyotes to be hunted 24/7, throughout the year.

County senators split on pot legalization bill

Forestry students win in statewide FFA competition

MIDDLEBURY — For students in the Patricia A. Hannaford Career Center’s Forestry and Natural Resource Management Program, the taste of victory at the FFA Winter Forestry Competition was sweet — or, to be more specific, it tasted like maple syrup.

The class of seven students got an opportunity to demonstrate their skills this past January at the statewide competition at the Vermont Farms Expo in Essex Junction. While the program won first in the state, juniors Greg Ouellette of Bristol took first and Jacob LaFleche of Panton took third as individuals.

St. Mary's Father Beaudin earns Papal appointment

MIDDLEBURY — Not a bad couple of years for Father William Beaudin and his parishioners at St. Mary’s Catholic Church.

The congregation — which includes St. Bernadette Church in Bridport and St. Genevieve Church in Shoreham — recently capped a successful fundraising campaign that resulted in major interior renovations to the historic St. Mary’s building on College Street.

MUHS students recognized by faculty

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury Union High School Student Recognition Breakfast for Quarter 2 was held at the Glass Onion on Thursday, Feb. 24. Ten students were nominated for awards by members of the faculty for a variety of reasons including improvement in academic achievement, positive attitude and motivation, as well as notable service to the school. These students serve as role models for other students at MUHS.

Local college entrepreneurs win prizes

BURLINGTON — Two Addison County men who attend Champlain College and a Middlebury College student are sharing $10,000 in prize money awarded last week in a competition for collegiate entrepreneurs. The money will be used to help them launch their respective companies.

Matthew Giles of New Haven and Cullen Jemison of Starksboro, who both attend Champlain College, are the founders of Thermouse. At the first-ever LaunchVT Collegiate Competition, on Feb. 19, they won first place and $7,500.
