Middlebury board edges toward budget

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury selectboard made no changes to a proposed 2014-2015 municipal budget of $9,154,323 that was presented and drew few comments at a public hearing on Tuesday.

The board on Jan. 28 will finalize the budget for the March 3 town meeting, at which voters will weigh in on the spending plan. The current version would require a property tax levy of $6,526,393.

William Sessions, longtime federal judge from Vermont, opts for part time

MONTPELIER (AP) — Vermont federal Judge William K. Sessions III is taking senior status after 18 years on the bench. Sessions and his wife, Abi, reside in Cornwall.

U.S. Sen. Patrick Leahy, chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, says Sessions informed the president last week.

Grant to help ID job skills in demand

MIDDLEBURY — Three Addison County organizations jointly announced their receipt of a $9,740 workforce development grant from the Vermont Department of Labor’s Regional Workforce Partnership Program. Addison County Economic Development Corp. (ACEDC), United Way of Addison County (UWAC), and Patricia A. Hannaford Career Center (PAHCC) will collaborate to initiate a labor skills gap analysis beginning this spring.

Middlebury expands Posse partnership

MIDDLEBURY — Starting in the fall of 2015, Middlebury College will offer full-tuition scholarships annually to 10 urban students pursuing careers in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) through an expanded partnership with The Posse Foundation. Middlebury was one of 10 institutions recognized at a White House ceremony today for participating in the initiative, which will fund 500 Posse scholars over the next five years.

Refrigerant leak forces temporary closure of Hannaford's

MIDDLEBURY — A refrigerant leak from a cooling system at Hannaford’s Supermarket in Middlebury released a gas that caused at least four employees to become ill and also prompted the store to close for most of Thursday morning, January 23, according to emergency responders that included members of a state Vermont Hazardous Materials Response Team.

Lincoln school board taps Kirshenbaum

LINCOLN — The Lincoln School Board on Jan. 15 filled a vacancy created by the resignation of board chair Henry Wilmer.

Three board members interviewed two candidates at the meeting, and unanimously selected Ari Kirshenbaum to be the new member.

College leases the former state office buildings on Exchange St.

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury College has signed a 10-year lease to occupy the office building located at 700 Exchange St. in Middlebury, between the Post Office Annex and Vermont Sun. The nearly 22,000-square-foot building will provide the college with much needed space for staff and allow for better use of space on campus, college officials said.

Local man still struggles with Vt. Health Connect

STARKSBORO — Jeff Keeney’s patience for Vermont Health Connect, the state’s incarnation of the Affordable Care Act, has run out.

“I don’t believe anything from Vermont Health Connect,” Keeney said late last week. “They’ve been wrong every step of the way.”

Bristol Fire Department elects new officers, taps LaRose as chief

BRISTOL — The Bristol Fire Department on Saturday elected new officers at its annual meeting, and installed Brett LaRose as the new chief.

LaRose has been with the department since 1995. He replaces outgoing chief John “Peeker” Heffernan, who served as chief for six years. Heffernan on Tuesday expressed confidence in the department’s choice of LaRose.

“I think he’ll do a great job — he’s been doing hard work, and he deserves credit,” Heffernan said.

County's best firefighters honored

FERRISBURGH — Firefighters from 17 departments in the county dined together this past Wednesday evening during the Addison County Firefighters Association annual meeting at the Eagles Club and recognized fellow members for their service.

Looking out at the crowd of men and women clad in dress white or blue shirts tucked into crisp black pants, keynote speaker Michael Desrochers was impressed. The director of state Division of Fire Safety, where he has worked for 25 years, Desrochers said he was honored.
