One-man shop sets benchmark for Windsor chairs

WALTHAM — Maybe Waltham’s Timothy Clark was destined to be a woodworker, even though back in his Middlebury College days he started as a Pre-Med major before in 1985 earning a degree in Spanish, with a minor in Art.

But he recalled the impression Colonial Williamsburg made on him during a visit to Virginia from his hometown of New Hartford, N.Y., near Utica.

Sixty dogs walked at Woofstock

MIDDLEBURY — Saturday, Sept. 17, yielded great things for Homeward Bound, Addison County’s Humane Society, as their largest fundraiser of the year raised over $26,000 to support the work of the shelter. Sixty dogs and 126 people participated in the 1-mile walk around Middlebury, but it was the festivities that followed the walk that seemed to spark the greatest excitement.

SALISBURY — On Monday Sept. 26, children at Salisbury Community School and New Leaf Montessori School were treated to storytelling events with Duncan McDougall, executive director of the Children’s Literacy Foundation (CLiF). These kickoff events celebrate the Rural Libraries Grant awarded to the Salisbury Free Public Library, a small yet energetic library in the heart of Salisbury village.

Swim team seeks members, info night Tuesday

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury Aquatic Club (MAC) offers an organized age-group swimming program for children 5 years of age and older.

“We meet the needs of all swimmers, from beginner to advanced,” said organizer Liz Ross.

MAC will host an information night on Tuesday, Oct. 4, at 6 p.m. at the Middlebury College Natatorium for swimmers ages 5-18.

The Middlebury College Performing Arts Series welcomes back the Gramophone Award-winning Belcea Quartet for their fifth concert appearance at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday in the Mahaney Center for the Arts. The program will include Schubert’s Quartet No. 10 in E-flat Major; Brahms’s Quartet in A Minor; and Schubert’s Quartet No. 14 in D Minor, “Death and the Maiden.”

Middle school boys wanted

MIDDLEBURY — Calling all middle school boys in Addison County!

Brother to Brother will be holding its first event of the year on Friday, Oct. 7, from 4:30-6:30 p.m. at McCullough Student Center on the Middlebury College campus.

Organizers will have a campus-wide scavenger hunt with snacks provided.

Brother to Brother is a mentorship organization that seeks to connect college students with middle school students in a group setting, all with the goal of fostering healthy concepts of masculinity.

75-year-old man killed in Middlebury car crash Thursday evening

MIDDLEBURY — A 75-year-old Middlebury man was killed in a two-car crash on the south end of Middlebury village Thursday evening.

Middlebury police and fire officials and Middlebury Regional EMS responded to the crash at 7:43 p.m. on Sept. 29 to the scene of the crash on Court Street Extension in front of the Centre Plaza, where the Hannaford supermarket and TJ Maxx are located.

Police report that they found David H. Davignon, the driver and lone occupant of one of the vehicles, was unresponsive and bystanders began CPR.

Lincoln faces trash deadline

LINCOLN — Casella Waste Systems said it will end or change its current arrangement with Lincoln on Oct. 1 and no new arrangement is yet in place.

The town’s selectboard is still searching for affordable and workable ways to get Lincoln’s trash and recycling picked up.

Selectboard Chair Bill Finger said that the volume of recyclables and trash that Lincoln produces is not enough to make it cost-effective for Casella to come up the mountain and collect it from an area with a dispersed population.
