See You at the Lake' solo exhibit opens at Northern Daughters

See You at the Lake, a solo exhibit of new work from Anne Cady comes to Northern Daughters gallery at 221 Main Street in Vergennes next Thursday, July 13. The exhibit will be on view through Aug. 27 with an opening reception on Friday, July 21, from 5-8 p.m.

Author to discuss his book on Frederick Douglass

Scholar and author John Stauffer will present his groundbreaking new work, “Picturing Frederick Douglass,” at Rokeby Museum on Sunday, July 23 at 3 p.m.

Orwell man killed in motorcycle crash on Monday

BRIDPORT — An Orwell man died after a traffic accident Monday afternoon in which the motorcycle he was driving on Route 125 in Bridport crashed into a car.

Lloyd Boyea, 47, was pronounced dead at UVM Medical Center, where he was taken for treatment of injuries from the crash.

Bristol considers firearms law

BRISTOL — Selectboard members are considering an ordinance that would regulate the discharge of firearms in Bristol. The ordinance, if passed, would be a first of its kind in the town.

The local law, which the Bristol selectboard heard about at their June 26 meeting, would prohibit firing a gun “within a safety zone of 500 feet from another person’s/entity’s residence, building, place of business or camper in the town of Bristol.”

Lincoln woman joins D.C. health care protest and gets arrested

LINCOLN — Lincoln resident Mari Cordes on Thursday returned from a whirlwind, three-day trip to Washington, D.C., that included wading through bustling airports, bunking down at a hostel and getting arrested.

While that might seem like a nightmare scenario for most people, Cordes pronounced the trip a rousing success.

Poets wanted! Bread Loaf invites local writers to share what matters to them

Local group searches for DeLorean to amp up 'Back to the Future' remake

MIDDLEBURY — Two years ago, Kurt Broderson organized a local effort to participate in a remake of the “Raiders of the Lost Ark” film.

He’s now rallying the troops to act out some scenes from the 1980s hit “Back to the Future,” an effort that will also involve the search for a “holy grail.” Only in this case, it’s not the Ark of the Covenant, but rather a rare DeLorean sports car that serves as the vehicle for time travel in “Back to the Future.”

Salisbury art restorers are 'masters of disguise'

“Much like people do,” said Randy Smith, an art restorer in Salisbury who’s been in the biz since the early ’70s. “You don’t notice it day to day, but after it’s been a while the varnish yellows, there can be nicotine, smoke or mold stains; the paint can blister or crack; even fire sparks can burn small holes.”

That’s when you call Randy and his wife, Linda Hampton Smith, to help restore the piece to it’s original quality.

Longtime Bristol police chief to retire this August

BRISTOL — Bristol Police Chief Kevin Gibbs will retire at the end of August.

Gibbs officially announced his retirement at the Bristol Police Department staff meeting last Tuesday, June 27, saying: “It has been an honor and a privilege to serve the community of Bristol.”

Gibbs has served on the Bristol police force for 31 years.
