Work begins on temporary bridges for Middlebury

MIDDLEBURY — For years the Middlebury rail bridges project has consisted of speculation, blueprints and written narratives. 

Starting this week, the $52 million project will begin to take physical shape, as workers lay the groundwork for installing two temporary spans that will allow for demolition of the deteriorating Main Street and Merchants Row bridges.

In the first of what are likely to be hundreds of regular updates, Middlebury rail bridges project Community Liaison Jim Gish opened his update with three simple words:

Culinary trio to open Coriander Restaurant in Middlebury

MIDDLEBURY — To say that both Dave Laferriere-Hall and Dustin Simmons know their way around a kitchen would be an understatement.

Each has spent better than a decade toiling in restaurants throughout the state, ranging from pizza joints to fine dining establishments. Their paths crossed around two years ago at Fire & Ice Restaurant in Middlebury, where Laferriere-Hall works as a sous chef and Simmons as a line cook.

Conservation districts protecting rivers

WAITSFIELD, — This spring, Vermont’s Natural Resources Conservation Districts (NRCDs) have planted trees on over 20 acres of buffers on stream banks and shorelines throughout the state to help protect water quality.

Over the past four years, over 60 acres of riparian buffers have been installed throughout Vermont through the Trees for Streams program, planting over 22,000 trees on nine miles of riverbanks and shorelines.

State police omit breath test results from DUI reports: Media concerned about new policy

MIDDLEBURY — Vermont State Police press releases related to drunken driving cases no longer include results of the preliminary breath test (PBT) for drivers who submit to that test after they are stopped.

That decision is based on a directive from key Vermont Department of Public Safety officials, including Commissioner Tom Anderson, who assert — among other things — that making PBT results public prior to a drunken driving suspect’s arraignment might affect his or her ability to get a fair trial.

Vermont Gas fined $25,000 for destruction of rare sunflowers

MONKTON — Vermont Gas Systems was fined $25,000 late last month by the Public Service Board for the destruction of a rare plant during the construction of a 41-mile natural gas pipeline into Addison County.

The penalty is in addition to a $33,687.50 fine that the state Environmental Court in December assessed against Vermont Gas for the same incident.

Police puppy ready to grow into patrol job: Neila becomes Officer Austin's new partner

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury Police Department’s newest recruit isn’t striking fear in the hearts of would-be criminals — at least not yet.

At 12 weeks old, weighing around 20 pounds and eager to give out kisses, Officer Neila is melting her share of hearts as she prepares to grow into the role of Middlebury PD’s new police dog.

Toward the end of this year, she’ll be helping Middlebury police take a bite out of crime.

LEICESTER — After 15 years of making cheese, you might think that Hannah Sessions and Greg Bernhardt are sick of the stuff. But that’s simply untrue. “We still love cheese,” said Bernhardt; Sessions nodded by her husband’s side in a recent interview. “It has to be the greatest food.”

MONKTON — When Stephen Pilcher and wife Deb Gaynor bought their Monkton home 30-some years ago, they didn’t just buy a house and land, they bought a legend.

From 1973 to 1982, the former dairy barn at 126 Covered Bridge Road was the recording studio and administrative headquarters for Philo Records, renowned in folk circles as a label where musicians could make their own music, their own way, with their own integrity.

State milk production up slightly

VERMONT — The USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service recently reported that milk production in Vermont during April totaled 230 million pounds, up 0.9 percent from April 2016.

The average milk price received by Vermont farmers in March 2017, at $18.90 per hundredweight, was down 70 cents from February 2016 but up $2.40 from March a year ago.

Summer lunch program to continue for Brandon-area students

BRANDON — The SOAR summer program (Success through Opportunities, Academics and Recreation) is again participating in the Summer Food Service Program for Children. Funded by the United States Department of Agriculture, the program is designed to ensure that children who rely on free or reduced price meals during the school year continue to have adequate nutrition throughout the summer.
