Former Weybridge town clerk pleads guilty in $485,000 embezzlement

WEYBRIDGE — Former Weybridge Town Clerk and Treasurer Karen Brisson appeared in U.S. District Court in Rutland on Monday and pleaded guilty to a charge of federal program embezzlement. Town officials said an audit had determined that she had embezzled $485,000 in town funds since 2006.

Brisson, 50, agreed to pay restitution to the town.

House panel considering GMO labeling bill

MIDDLEBURY — While lawmakers spent much time at a legislative breakfast at the American Legion hall in Middlebury on Monday talking about taxes, they also discussed important legislation for the farm community, among other things.

At the top of the list was a bill that would require the labeling of foods containing genetically modified organisms, known as GMOs.

Brandon's Coburn crowned Mrs. Vermont

BRANDON — Brandon native Stacey S. Coburn was recently crowned Mrs. Vermont United States 2013. Coburn will represent married women across Vermont as she competes for the national title of Mrs. United States in Las Vegas in July.

Some household products emit chemicals into the air

Volatile Organic Compounds, or VOCs, are a large group of carbon-based chemicals that evaporate easily at room temperature. Commonly found in many household products including carpets, cleaning products and adhesives, they emit potentially harmful levels of chemicals into the air for many months after application.

According to the Natural Resources Defense Council, research has shown that high or prolonged exposure to VOCs can yield adverse effects, including eye and throat irritation, headaches, asthma, liver damage, complications to the central nervous system and cancer.

Vergennes youth wrestlers are seeing success

MILTON — Ten Vergennes Area Youth Wrestling Club members won titles this past weekend at a Milton tournament as what club organizers said has been a successful season for the organization continued.

Club membership has grown to 53, and 46 wrestlers competed this past weekend at Milton. There, the team also won the tournament’s sportsmanship award, as voted by the event’s referees and other competing clubs.

As well as the 10 first-place finishes at Milton, Vergennes youth wrestlers earned nine second-place results and 14 third-place showings.

Lincoln students step on stage, step back in time with Shakespeare play

LINCOLN — Renaissance Italy came to life last week at the Lincoln Community School with a performance of William Shakespeare’s “Much Ado About Nothing,” this year’s annual play put on by the school’s fifth- and sixth-grade students.

“It’s a really fun play,” said sixth-grader Lizzie Nault, shortly before the first performance on Wednesday. She played Hero, one of the play’s female protagonists.

MUMS quartet has a head for numbers

RANDOLPH — A quartet of Middlebury Union Middle School students kept their thinking caps on Saturday, March 16, and earned fourth place as a team in the 30th Vermont State MathCounts competition.

One of them — eighth-grader Ronan Howlett — won the individual championship and will represent Vermont at the national contest.

His teammates were seventh-graders Greta Hardy-Mittell of East Middlebury, Laura Whitely of Weybridge and Julian Schmitt of Middlebury. Their coach is Diane Guertin.

Route 7 traffic light design work to begin in Ferrisburgh

FERRISBURGH — The wait for a fully signalized traffic light at the Ferrisburgh intersection of Route 7 with Little Chicago and Middlebrook roads might still best be measured in years.

But the Agency of Transportation has been working on the project and is planning on presenting a design to the town selectboard this summer, according to an email from VTrans project manager Joshua Schultz.
