Students and community come together for ANeSU arts festival

BRISTOL — Mount Abraham Union High School veritably exploded with color, sound and movement last week during the three-day Addison Northeast Supervisory Union Fine Arts Festival.

“The arts festival gives us a chance to pause and honor the arts and to honor the artist within our students,” said Mandy Chesley-Park, who together with Jennifer Allred coordinated the festival.

Tesla Powerwall arrives in Vermont

ST. ALBANS TOWN — If you think rural Vermont and don’t think “technical innovation” — think again. Vermont homeowner Troy Turner became the recipient of Green Mountain Power (GMP)’s first Tesla Powerwall early this month, a cutting-edge, rechargeable lithium-ion battery that can store backup power, akin to an electric generator.

Turner is the first person in the state, and one of the first in the country, to receive the device.

Bristol-area students get a bang out of taiko drumming

BRISTOL — Busloads of elementary students arrived at Mount Abraham Union High School Thursday to watch a performance from Burlington Taiko, led by master taiko drummer Stuart Paton, and then take taiko drumming workshops, a few classes at a time.

The performance was part of the annual Addison Northeast Supervisory Union Fine Arts Festival (see story here).

Middlebury's former town office demolition nears

MIDDLEBURY — Plans for demolition of the old municipal building in Middlebury are moving ahead.

Members of the Middlebury selectboard last Tuesday unanimously accepted bids from contractors to perform asbestos abatement in the building and gymnasium at 94 Main St., which served as town offices for five decades until last month.

Middlebury to fill new staff positions

MIDDLEBURY — At their May 10 meeting, the Middlebury selectboard approved the job descriptions of two new positions that will be added to the municipal staff later this year.

The first is an “Assistant Zoning Administrator/Development Review Board Coordinator.” This person would work under Jennifer Murray, the town’s director of planning and zoning. The hire would, among other things, provide customer assistance on zoning questions, receive development applications, write DRB meeting agendas and minutes, and conduct site inspections.

Vergennes boosts fire spending

VERGENNES — Spending on the Vergennes Fire Department will rise by about $15,000 next year as higher bond payments kick in for equipment purchases made five years ago.

Vergennes is also looking at bonding for another fire truck in the next year or two.

At its May 10 meeting, the Vergennes City Council approved a $156,327 fire department budget for the 2016-2017 fiscal year that begins on July 1. That decision increases spending from the current level of $141,191.

Delays expected as Route 125 at the Middlebury Gap is rebuilt

HANCOCK — A major summer road reconstruction project is under way on Route 125 between the Middlebury Snow Bowl and Route 100 in Hancock. Driver should expect some delays and cyclists are warned of difficult road conditions.

Construction crews will be working throughout the summer excavating 6.5 miles of road surface and correcting roadway deficiencies. As a result of this work, the condition of the road will consist of a mix of gravel and paved surfaces.

Unified ACSD to debut on June 22

MIDDLEBURY — The first meeting of the new Addison Central School District Board will take place on Wednesday, June 22, at 6 p.m., at a location still to be determined.

This information was confirmed on May 5 by officials with the Addison Central Supervisory Union and the Vermont Agency of Education. The first meeting is expected to be focused on board organization, such as election of officers and future topics of conversation, officials said.

Three VUHS girls to attend Girls State

VERGENNES — The Vergennes American Legion Auxiliary has selected three junior girls from Vergennes Union High School to attend Green Mountain Girls’ State this year. The Auxiliary will sponsor Alyse Beauchemin, Caroline Johnston and Charlotte Haigis as they spend the week of June 18 at Vermont Technical College in Randolph.
