Local artists' exhibit 'Disclosures' to open at Town Hall Theater

MIDDLEBURY — In “Disclosures: Coming Out of Obscurity,” Lily Hinrichsen and Karla Van Vliet bring to light parts of their past, which have lived in darkness and obscurity, through the strength and delicacy of their assemblages, works on paper and mixed media. The exhibit runs March 11-May 7 at the Jackson Gallery at Town Hall Theater in Middlebury, with an opening reception on Friday, March 25, from 5-7 p.m.

Scheu to stress business strengths in run for Vt. House

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury Democrat Robin Scheu has spent the past 15 years considering a run for the state Legislature.

This is the year she puts her campaign into motion.

Scheu, executive director of the Addison County Economic Development Corp. (ACEDC), confirmed on Monday she will run for one of the two seats representing Middlebury in the Vermont House. Her decision was fanned by the recent announcement by Rep. Betty Nuovo, D-Middlebury, to call it quits this year after three decades in the House.

MUMS Principal Patrick Reen is finalist for ANeSU superintendent

BRISTOL — Middlebury Union Middle School Principal Patrick Reen has emerged as the finalist candidate for superintendent of Addison Northeast Supervisory Union. (See "Reen says listening and building relationships are his strengths.")

“The search committee was very impressed with Patrick,” said Robert Stevens, the educational consultant hired by ANeSU to facilitate its search for a superintendent.

Change in solar law eyed

Public comments were due Wednesday on new rules that developers say will kill independent utility-scale renewable energy growth in Vermont.

Utilities say the changes are needed to protect ratepayers from unfavorable energy contracts and avoid expensive infrastructure upgrades that conflict with the state’s goal of encouraging small projects throughout the state.

Childcare funding is level

A state program that helps low-income families afford childcare is not slated for an increase in the state’s budget for the next fiscal year. That could be a further stress on a program that is already stretched thin due to a number of factors — including the high number of young children in state custody.

Gov. Peter Shumlin’s budget proposal for fiscal year 2017 does not include more money for the childcare financial assistance program.

GOP candidates say 'No' to health exchange

MONTPELIER — Vermont’s four candidates for governor agree that something needs to be done about Vermont Health Connect, and now both Republican candidates have made campaign promises to abandon the exchange.

Lt. Gov. Phil Scott, who is seeking the Republican nomination against Bruce Lisman, a former Wall Street executive, released an ad last Thursday saying that if he becomes governor he will transition Vermont to the federal health exchange or to a multistate exchange.

Hanson's win in the Ripton selectboard race is affirmed by recount

RIPTON — A March 4 recount of Town Meeting Day election ballots in Ripton confirmed the election of Perry Hanson over incumbent Selectman Richard Collitt, by the same 116-112 tally. Collitt had requested the recount in light of the closeness of the election.

Hanson — who, in addition to winning a seat on the town selectboard, also won election to Ripton’s seat on the new Addison Central School District board last Tuesday — was pleased with the results of the recount.

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury Community Television (MCTV) will hold a roundtable discussion, titled “Archiving Our Community in the 21st Century,” at its annual meeting on Wednesday, March 16. The discussion, from 4 to 5:30 p.m. in the Community Room of Ilsley Library in Middlebury, will bring together a cross-section of community organizations and people interested in documenting current events and preserving the history of the Middlebury area.

Film, panel to raise questions about Vermont dams

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury College, the Vermont Natural Resources Council, and Nature Conservancy in Vermont will screen “DamNation” on Monday, March 14, at 7 p.m. at Dana Auditorium on the Middlebury College campus. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. This award-winning film sheds new light on America’s dams and the national effort to remove so called “deadbeat” dams from the nation’s rivers.
