Nordic ski area to boost tourism draw with new trail

RIPTON — Middlebury College’s Nordic ski center in Ripton has completed a new five-kilometer ski trail and enhanced its ski shop in a major step forward in the effort to make Addison County a better draw for those interested in winter sports and recreation.

The new trail has been certified for national and international competition, and was one of the key elements that helped Middlebury solidify its bid to host the NCAA Skiing Championships in 2013, according to Mike Hussey, director of the Carroll and Jane Rikert Nordic Center.

White River work spurs scrutiny

GRANVILLE/HANCOCK — In the days and weeks after Tropical Storm Irene hit Vermont in late August, it wasn’t uncommon to see excavators in rivers across the state, clearing culverts and rebuilding riverbanks.

Bristol bridge replacement projects to be delayed for six months

BRISTOL — Replacing two bridges in Bristol — the South Street Bridge and the Route 116 “Stoplight Bridge” — has been on the Vermont Agency of Transportation’s to-do list since the early ’80s. VTrans officials meeting with Bristol selectboard members Monday said the timetable for completing that work would be pushed back six months from the timeframe they gave in March.

Mary Hogan students read for 431,677 minutes in fundraiser

MIDDLEBURY — Mary Hogan Elementary School students are ready to reap the rewards of ID-4’s first-ever Read-a-thon, which in November saw participants read a combined total of 431,677 minutes while raising thousands of dollars for education programs.

“We really do all feel that the first-ever Mary Hogan School Read-a-thon was already an amazing success,” said Janet Lapiner, a lead organizer of the event. “The students read and read, and then read more ... and more. And that is the real prize.”

Martin makes planning changes

BRISTOL — With last week’s resignation of Chairman Tom Wells of the Bristol Planning Commission, Vice-Chair Chico Martin has stepped into the acting chairman’s role.

Although the planning commission didn’t discuss this development on Tuesday, Martin told the Independent he would be acting chair until and possibly after — if appointed — the planning commission’s organizational meeting on the third Tuesday in April.

A Mexican farmworker tells his own story

MIDDLEBURY — A normally hidden population was visible in Middlebury last Saturday, when Mexican nationals gathered to meet with Daniel Hernandez Joseph, consul general of Mexico in Boston, at the Champlain Valley Unitarian Universalist Society.

Luis, who asked that his real name not be used to protect his privacy, was one of hundreds of farm workers who headed to Middlebury to get Mexican passports and paperwork, to ask questions, learn about their rights and obligations and to attend to basic medical needs.

Middlebury Police Log: Police seek info on Case St. accident

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police responded to the scene of a car-tree collision near North Forty Lane on Sunday, Dec. 4. Police said Kathy L. Grace, 44, of Middlebury was northbound on Case Street a little before 10 a.m. when for an unknown reason, the vehicle traveled across the southbound lane and struck a tree.

Vergennes takes stock of drug abuse problem

VERGENNES — More than 250 Vergennes-area residents attended a Wednesday meeting called by Vergennes Police Chief George Merkel that was intended to spark a community-wide effort to combat illegal drug use in the city and surrounding towns.

The crowd in the St. Peter’s Church Parish Hall often applauded Merkel and other speakers at what moderator Scott Gaines of Vergennes called a “community awareness meeting,”

Warm November set some all-time records

ADDISON COUNTY — For those Addison County residents who felt November was unseasonably warm, it wasn’t a figment of their imaginations. Last month was truly record breaking.

According to data documented by National Weather Service observers:

  South Lincoln had its warmest November on record, with a monthly average of 40.8 degrees. The second warmest November in South Lincoln weather history was in 2006 at 40.3 degrees.
