Master gardener course offered

BURLINGTON Gardeners interested in taking the University of Vermont (UVM) Extension Master Gardener course can do so this spring from the comfort of their home.

The popular 13-week home horticulture course will be offered statewide as an online course through GoToWebinar. Students may either watch archived recordings of the classes or participate in live, interactive webinars on Tuesday nights, beginning Feb. 2, from 6:15 to 9 p.m.

Santa to make another visit to Vergennes

VERGENNES — The Addison County Eagles in Vergennes will host Breakfast with Santa on Saturday, Dec. 19, from 9-11 a.m.

There is no charge for children 12 years or younger. Adults pay $5.

Night Fires will pull you out of the dark

MIDDLEBURY — The Night Fires are being lit once more. Performance dates are Friday-Sunday, Dec. 18-20, at Town Hall Theater in Middlebury. Shows are at 8 p.m. on Friday, 4 and 8 p.m. on Saturday, and 4 p.m. on Sunday. Pre-show singing begins approximately 20 minutes before the show.

This year Theatre Group, Ltd., which has been performing pageant-like celebrations with music and dance at the time of the winter solstice for over 35 years, tells its version of an ancient and familiar tale.

Meeting in New Haven to discuss power substation plan

BRANDON — To say that owning the Watershed Tavern building is a dream come true for Ellen Walter would not be an overstatement.

“For so many people in this town, this is their fantasy,” Walter said as she looked out the rear picture window at Neshobe Falls on a recent afternoon. “I’ve been in love with this building since I opened the door four years ago.”

Environmental court says Shoreham whiskey maker must follow Act 250 rules

SHOREHAM — A Vermont Environmental Court judge has rejected WhistlePig LLC’s longstanding assertion that it should be considered an agricultural enterprise and thereby entitled to an exemption from Act 250 regulations governing the production and storage of its rye whiskey at its farm off Quiet Valley Road in Shoreham.

Plank Road knoll to get warning signs

FERRISBURGH — In addition to hearing from Addison County Sheriff Don Keeler, the Ferrisburgh selectboard heard about a possible solution to a recent complaint about dangerous driving in town.

Board chairman Steve Gutowski said that road foreman John Bull was going to install warning signs on a knoll on Plank Road between South Middlebrook and Pea Ridge roads. Residents on Nov. 17 complained the spot was dangerous because of speeding drivers and limited visibility.

Middlebury begins budget work

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury officials will spend the next month trimming the first draft of a 2016-2017 municipal budget that reflects a $290,522 increase in spending, which would translate into a 4-cent rise in the town’s municipal tax rate.

Sheriff pitches services to Ferrisburgh

FERRISBURGH — Two weeks after Vergennes officials met with the Ferrisburgh selectboard to discuss providing city police service to the town, on Tuesday Addison County Sheriff Don Keeler told the board he believed his department could do the same job for less money.

Keeler also said he wished the board had contacted him previously to clear up its questions about his department’s performance in speed control and willingness to work nights.
