Granville approves building renovation bond

GRANVILLE — A small number of Granville citizens voiced their opinions in a vote last week to allow the town to apply for a bond of up to $200,000 that would pay for repairs on town buildings.

Grant helps Bristol with town planning

BRISTOL — The town of Bristol will continue to revise its bylaws with a $12,350 grant it received this last from the state Municipal and Regional Planning Fund. With the grant money, Bristol will partner with Smart Growth Vermont, a nonprofit organization, to incorporate as much community input as possible into the process of rewriting its bylaws. 

This year, the Municipal and Regional Planning Fund awarded a total of $347,291 to 38 towns across the state, including Vergennes. The fund, which was established in 1988, supports municipal planning and development.

New Haven tract on Route 7 eyed for major solar farm

NEW HAVEN — A team of Winooski-based engineers is proposing to build one of the state’s largest solar farms on a 40-acre portion of a 180-acre parcel on the west side of Route 7, across from the Hill Top RV Center in New Haven.

The proposed project, on land owned by Albert and Gail Freyer, would feature 178 ground-mounted solar trackers with photovoltaic panels capable of harvesting enough energy to power 500 homes annually. It would also include an organic farm operation calling for sheep and goats to graze near the high-tech equipment.

State orders closure of Vergennes nursing home

VERGENNES — Officials from the Vermont Department of Disabilities, Aging and Independent Living (DAIL) in late May revoked the license of the operator of Alden Place Residential Care Home LLC in Vergennes for a series of 23 alleged violations that DAIL Deputy Commissioner Brendan Hogan said affected “the health and safety of the residents.”

MVAA seeks $1M to help fund new home

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury Volunteer Ambulance Association (MVAA) has spent the past 40 years delivering critical medical services to ailing county residents.

Now the MVAA is hoping the community will help it deliver on a new, state-of-the-art emergency response headquarters that is nearing completion on land just north of Porter Medical Center off South Street.

Campus wall to become canvas

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury College students have long commented on the empty back wall of the Wright Memorial Theater, a 58-by-53-foot white space facing a parking lot off of Shannon Street.

But if the efforts of recent graduate Kate Lupo pay off, the wall will soon get a makeover in the form of an environmentally-themed mural — a reproduction of a set of 16 prints by Vermont artist and Middlebury College alumna Sabra Field, called ‘Cosmic Geometry.’

Starksboro barn dance to aid Haitians

STARKSBORO — The traditional contra dance call of “grab your partner by the hand” has taken on a whole new meaning in light of the orphans affected by the Jan. 12 earthquake in Haiti. Local activists who have seen firsthand the plight of the Port-au-Prince orphanage Men Nan Men (Creole for Hand in Hand) have organized a barn dance in Starksboro this Saturday to raise funds to support these children in need.

HOPE launches drive for $145K

MIDDLEBURY — For the second year in a row, Helping Overcome Poverty’s Effects, commonly known as HOPE, has launched a special fund-raising campaign in order to meet the growing demand for services by Addison County residents still weathering tough economic times.

Jeanne Montross, executive director of HOPE, said her organization is seeking to raise $145,000 in donations and another $6,700 through special events — including a fashion show this fall to be called “Model Citizens.”
