Bohjalian’s 16 novel: Love story with a twist

LINCOLN — Lincoln author Chris Bohjalian’s 16th novel, which hits bookstores July 9, begins with a sadistic bloodbath and turns out to be a love story. “The Light in the Ruins” is set amidst the chaos of war-torn Tuscany in 1943, and features a German lieutenant and a young Italian beauty from a family of noble lineage, the Rosatis.

Burnham Hall contra dance to benefit Lincoln Historical Society

LINCOLN — Susan Kevra, the daughter of late Lincoln resident Mary Anne Kevra, had come to the Green Mountains for the summer to tie up lose ends and finalize the sale of her mother’s South Lincoln home.

A contra dance caller who lives in Nashville with her Grammy-nominated guitarist husband Russ Barenberg, Kevra welcomed the opportunity for the homecoming.

Brandon schedules fourth vote on town budget

BRANDON — The Brandon selectboard has made more spending cuts and approved yet another town budget and yet another vote date — its fourth in four months.

Following a marathon public meeting that lasted more than three and half hours this past Monday night, the board OK’d a $3,147,634 spending plan for the fiscal year that began July 1, with $2,331,134 to be raised by property taxes. That spending number represents an increase of 3.7 percent, or $84,084, from the budget for the year just ended.

Young farmers, land trust hope to conserve 687 acres in Bristol

BRISTOL — Trent and Abby Roleau always knew they wanted to have their own farm, a dream that few people can achieve in their early 20s.

Then, early this year, an email from the Vermont Land Trust landed in their inboxes. VLT was notifying its email list that it was seeking applications for a conservation project that would protect 687 acres of woodland and farmland on Route 116 north of Bristol village, land currently owned by the Farr and Fuller families. The Roleaus decided to throw their hat in the ring and drew up a business plan.

VERGENNES — Astronauts on the 1970 Apollo 13 moon launch had to abort after 56 hours and barely returned to Earth with their lives.

Unlike them, Vergennes Union High School 8th-grader and space aficionado Alyse Beauchemin successfully completed her mission — a Capstone Challenge Project on that ill-fated NASA operation.

ADDISON COUNTY — Folks in Greater Addison County are gearing up to celebrate 237 years of American independence on and around the Fourth of July this week. No matter how residents like to spend the holiday, there are events in the area for all who want to put on the red, white and blue during the week of July 4.
