Brandon moves closer to hosting a marijuana dispensary

BRANDON — The Development Review Board in Brandon has acted quickly on a controversial application to establish a medical marijuana dispensary in Brandon, granting a permit last week and opening the door to an appeal.

The move came just a few days after Brandon residents voiced their concerns about a pot dispensary at a well-attended town meeting.

Former N.Y. resident cited for 'luring' a 15-year-old boy

MIDDLEBURY — A 21-year-old man living in Waltham pleaded not guilty on Monday in Addison County court to two charges of trying to sexually exploit a 15-year-old boy and sending explicit photos to the boy via a cell phone.

Robert Ritchey, a former Potsdam, N.Y., resident who had been renting a room in a Waltham home, faces up to five years and a fine of $10,000 on the first charge of sexual exploitation/luring a child, and another year and a $1,000 fine for sending indecent material to a minor.

Vermont lawmakers consider tax and fee increases

VERGENNES — When lawmakers return to Montpelier this week after their Town Meeting break, they will continue consideration of where to get revenues for state programs.

Lawmakers at the Legislative Breakfast in Vergennes last week discussed potential increases in existing fees and taxes, as well as Gov. Peter Shumlin’s proposed new 10-percent surcharge on break-open tickets sold by various civic groups, including the American Legion Halls.

Citizen seeking to open ANeSU teacher negotiations

BRISTOL — A Starksboro man would like Bristol-area school boards to be a little more transparent when negotiating teacher contracts, and he has filed a lawsuit that could be precedent-setting.

John Jefferies said in a complaint filed in court last week that the Addison Northeast Supervisory Union and Mount Abraham Union High School districts and their boards and committees have gone into executive session without cause during face-to-face and mediated meetings with representatives of the teachers’ union during contract negotiations.

Aspiring young artists exhibit their talents in Bristol

BRISTOL — March is Youth Arts Month across the nation, and for the last nine years, Art on Main in downtown Bristol has marked the occasion with an Emerging Artists Exhibit that gives young Five Town Area artists an opportunity to shine in a professional gallery setting.

Students with exceptional talent and dedication to the arts from Mount Abraham Union High School are selected by Mount Abe art teachers for the annual gallery exhibition. Their art is professionally framed and displayed at Art on Main for the month of March.

Tinkerer takes hobby to a new level with electronics fix-it shop

MIDDLEBURY — As a child, Joshua Chamberlain loved to take mechanical things apart and put them back together again. He wanted to see what made them tick and make sure they kept ticking when he had reassembled them.

Now 41, Chamberlain is still taking stuff apart — only he is now getting paid for it. He has just opened The Laptop Shop on Middlebury’s Merchants Row, where he works out bugs in computers and a variety of other electronics for customers who might otherwise have to make the trek to Rutland or Chittenden counties.

Historic Middlebury home renovated with energy efficiencies

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury residents and those driving north on Route 7 have been watching the yearlong renovation of 29 North Pleasant St., a yellow house just north of Charter House and the Middlebury Inn dating back to 1901. The building was vacant for several years, in part because it was very energy inefficient.

Should Middlebury require homeowners to shovel sidewalks?

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury residents are being asked to weigh in on the idea of instituting a new town ordinance that would require property owners to clear snow from their own sidewalks.

A few local residents — noting the selectboard’s ongoing efforts to contain the municipal budget — recently pitched the shoveling ordinance as a means of cutting costs and promoting more community spirit.

State IDs cause of illness that swept Bridport school

BRIDPORT — Vermont Department of Health officials on Friday confirmed the causes of a stomach bug that swept through the Bridport Central School community last week and ultimately forced the cancellation of classes on Thursday and Friday.

The Department of Health Laboratory confirmed norovirus in a sample voluntarily collected from a person who became ill at the school.
