Preventing hunger: Local schools feed more kids in need

Lawmakers at odds on $21M payback

MIDDLEBURY — Most local lawmakers said they are not keen on intervening in a case involving the proposed return to electricity ratepayers of around $21 million that was used to help stabilize Central Vermont Public Service Corp. in 2001 when it ran into some financial trouble.

CVPS, the state’s largest utility, weathered that financial storm (associated with hydro-power contracts) and is now on the verge of being acquired by, and merged with, Green Mountain Power (GMP) — which is owned by Montreal-based Gaz Metro.

Low snowfall, warm temps make history

ADDISON COUNTY — Once upon a time, March came in like a lion and went out like a lamb, but not this year. This past March came in like a lamb and went out like a hot tamale, throwing local residents, businesses and some wildlife for a loop. And the string of 70- and 80-degree days late in March followed an unusually warm and dry winter.

Locals eye future of county farm-to-school efforts

VERGENNES — On Tuesday evening, voices in farm-to-school efforts across the county joined together to create a “stone soup” of ideas for bringing local foods into the cafeteria and the classroom.

The event was the third and final Stone Soup Conference, this oneat Vergennes Union High School, put on by the Addison County Relocalization Network.

Middlebury unveils updated plan draft

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury Planning Commission is asking for public comments on the most expansive, graphic-laden town plan revision in the community’s history.

The state requires Vermont towns to update their plans — blueprints for how municipalities see themselves currently and how they would like to grow in the future — every five years.

It is an assignment the Middlebury Planning Commission has been working on for several months, and the results are eye-popping.

Mary Hogan school budget vote scheduled

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury voters next Wednesday, April 11, will be asked to approve a proposed 2012-2013 Mary Hogan Elementary School budget of $6,144,811, which would produce a 4.15-percent increase in spending but result in a small decrease in the education property tax rate.

ACSU narrows search for leader

MIDDLEBURY — A screening committee charged with reviewing applications for the vacant Addison Central Supervisory Union superintendency could endorse a finalist within the next few days.

Peter Conlon, Cornwall representative to the ACSU board and leader of the screening committee, confirmed on Monday that his panel had interviewed one of three finalists who had been flagged for the job. Conlon explained that the other two finalists ended up accepting other positions before the committee had a chance to interview them.

Rikert center seeks to add snowmaking

RIPTON — Middlebury College’s Rikert Nordic Ski Center is seeking permission to install snowmaking equipment to maximize winter use of its Ripton trails and ensure prime conditions for the NCAA Skiing Championship events that will be held there next March.

Birch syrup helps to fill the maple void

LEICESTER — It was one of very few “Maple Open House” signs seen over the annual March weekend during which Vermont sugarhouses invite in the general public, but the Sweet Success Sugar Shack is looking in a new direction.

A sudden warm-up in temperatures in late March brought a quick and then painful end to the annual maple sap run this year, leaving area sugarmakers with below-average sap supplies.

Plea filed in New Haven standoff

NEW HAVEN — A New Haven man on Monday pleaded innocent in Addison Country Superior Court (criminal division) to a felony charge of aggravated domestic assault with a weapon, stemming from his March 29 standoff with Vermont State Police that closed down Route 7 for more than seven hours.

Thomas Jerome, 51, was released following his arraignment on conditions that he not have any contact with his wife, with whom he had been arguing the night he allegedly sequestered himself in his Route 7 home, under the influence of alcohol, with a shotgun.
