From West Africa to slavery in the Deep South to white Vermont, Beck book weaves the tale

MIDDLEBURY — Vermont Folklife Center (VFC) founder Jane Beck promised Daisy Turner back in the mid-1980s that she would write a book on Turner’s gripping stories about her family’s odyssey from West Africa, through slavery, to a life of freedom and self sufficiency in the small community of Grafton, Vt.

Now 27 years removed from Daisy Turner’s death at the age of 104, Beck has finally made good on her pledge to her late friend, a master storyteller and the daughter of a slave.

Report offers details on trooper's death

VERMONT — The Vermont State Police this week issued a report on the circumstances of a trooper’s death during a training exercise this month.

Trooper Kyle Young, 28, of Monkton died suddenly of heatstroke during a Sept. 17 tryout exercise at a firing range in Jericho.

Middlebury professor, dancer to perform Oct. 4

MIDDLEBURY — As part of the campus-wide Celebration of 50 Years of Environmental Education and Leadership at Middlebury, dancer and professor Andrea Olsen will perform her newest work, “Dancing in Wild Places: Seaweed and Ocean Health” on Sunday, Oct. 4, at 2 p.m. in the Dance Theatre of the Kevin P. Mahaney ’84 Center for the Arts. The work represents the final major performance of Olsen’s 33-year career at Middlebury College, before she moves on to a three-year appointment at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey.

Ski lift rides, foliage viewing and breakfast at Snow Bowl bask

HANCOCK — The Middlebury College Snow Bowl will hold its annual Snow Bowl Family Bash on Saturday, Oct. 3, from noon-4 p.m. Proceeds benefit the Middlebury Ski Patrol.

The Worth Mountain Chairlift will be open for lift rides, with spectacular views of the fall foliage. Patrons may alternately choose to ride the lift up and hike down, or hike up and ride the lift down. Lift tickets cost $3 for stu- dents and children, and $5 for adults.

250 bikers take in scenery, local foods in Tour de Farms

BRISTOL — Cyclists in Saturday’s Tour de Farms enjoyed a gastronomic journey highlighting the fall harvest through the farmlands of Addison County, from sweet sips of fermented Aqua ViTea Organic Kombucha to fresh bunches of Boyer Farm’s Concord grapes.

About 250 bikers rode from Bristol to New Haven, Monkton, Hinesburg and Starksboro and back, making stops along the 37-mile route for creative and nutritious local samples from eight farm stands, three restaurants, and a total of 25 food vendors.

Muzzleloader application results can be found online

MONTPELIER — Deer hunters who applied for a Vermont muzzleloader season antlerless deer permit by the Aug. 28 deadline can now go to the Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department website (www.vtfishandwildlife.com) to see if they will be receiving a permit in the mail. 

The department announced the winners on Sept. 23, after conducting a randomized computer drawing.

BRISTOL — Monday night, the Addison Northeast Supervisory Union school board appointed Assistant Superintendent Catrina DiNapoli as Acting Superintendent, with responsibilities effective today, Tuesday, Sept. 29.

The ANeSU board also passed a motion to begin a search for a new superintendent.

The board took no formal action regarding Superintendent David Adams. ANeSU board chair Dawn Griswold said in an email on Tuesday afternoon that:

Leicester man killed in crash on Route 7

PITTSFORD — A Leicester man was killed in an early morning collision on Route 7 that closed the road through Pittsford for six hours on Sept. 18.

Vermont State Police said Bryan Greene, 43, was killed that Friday when at around 5:45 a.m. the motorcycle he was driving, a 1983 Honda Shadow, crashed head-on with a 2001 Oldsmobile Alero driven by Shane Goodrich, 28, of Rutland. Greene was pronounced dead at the scene. Goodrich was wearing a seatbelt and sustained minor injuries. Both vehicles were a total loss.
