Scholar to explore Shakespeare's influence on the USA

MIDDLEBURY — Columbia University professor James Shapiro will explore the history of Shakespeare in America in a talk at Middlebury College’s Mahaney Center for the Arts Concert Hall on Wednesday, Feb. 3, at 7 p.m. His talk, “Shakespeare in America,” is part of the Vermont Humanities Council’s First Wednesdays lecture series and is free and open to the public.

WhistlePig gives back to help Vermont agriculture

SHOREHAM — Gov. Peter Shumlin gave a shout-out to two local businesses during his recent State of the State address, crediting WhistlePig Whiskey and Long Trail-Otter Creek Brewing for making generous contributions to Vermont’s Working Lands Enterprise Fund (WLEF).

Experts to mull future of nuclear power at college symposium

MIDDLEBURY — The nuclear disasters of Chernobyl and Fukushima still linger in our memories. Thirty years after the first nuclear power plant meltdown and five years after the most recent, Middlebury College students and scholars from across the nation will gather late this week to explore nuclear power development at the Rohatyn Center for Global Affairs’ Third Annual Student Conference.

Many seats up for grabs on ANeSU boards

BRISTOL AREA — Sixteen seats on Addison Northeast Supervisory Union school boards come up for election this March, and the deadline for getting your name on the ballot is only a week away.

Residents will be voting on six school board seats in Bristol, five in Monkton, two in Starksboro, two in Lincoln and one in New Haven. In Lincoln and New Haven, all open seats are for those communities’ respective elementary school boards. Open seats in Bristol, Monkton and Starksboro are split among the elementary school boards and the Mount Abraham Union High School Board.

Ferrisburgh board crafts lean town budget

FERRISBURGH — The Ferrisburgh selectboard on Tuesday, Jan. 19, is expected to adopt a town budget proposal, one that will add about $56,500 of spending and, including voter charitable contributions, total $1,855,667.

Residents will have the final say on the Ferrisburgh municipal budget at Ferrisburgh’s town meeting, which will be held at Ferrisburgh Central School at 10 a.m. on Feb. 27.

Fire destroys Lincoln home, no one is hurt

LINCOLN — A fire, believed to have been started accidentally by faulty electrical wiring, destroyed a Lincoln house on the Ripton Road Thursday night. Around 70 firefighters from Lincoln, Bristol, Ripton, Starksboro and New Haven responded to the blaze, in which no one was hurt.

“When we got there the structure was completely engulfed in flames, and there was nobody in it,” said Lincoln Fire Chief Dan Ober.

Middlebury dog park gets thumbs up

MIDDLEBURY — At a Tuesday evening meeting, the Middlebury selectboard unanimously endorsed a proposal to locate a new dog park on Middlebury College-owned land off South Street, just east of the Middlebury Regional EMS headquarters.

Boosters of the new park had pitched the plan to town officials back in November. The selectboard declared conceptual support for the plan at that time, but organizers subsequently found themselves addressing some concerns about the park related primarily to its proximity to the MREMS helipad.

Executive training available to entrepreneurs

MONTPELIER — Vermont is seeking 15 small business owners to participate in the Emerging Leaders Initiative beginning in April at Vermont Technical College in Williston.

Emerging Leaders is a free executive-level training program for entrepreneurs to learn how to establish a three-year strategic growth plan for their businesses. The strategic plans emphasize organizational structure, resource network and assistance needed to build a sustainable business of size and scale.
