Business advice offered during wait for bridge

ADDISON COUNTY — Businesses affected by the closure and subsequent demolition of the Champlain Bridge are now being offered free consulting through the Vermont Small Business Development Center (VtSBDC).

Sarah Kearns, a VtSBDC business adviser, will offer her services to businesses of any type until the end of 2011 — even after the replacement bridge is scheduled to open in the fall of next year.

Green Mountain leads way in solar energy

STARKSBORO — A resident in Starksboro is realizing that, when it comes to Vermont utility companies, not all solar projects are created equal.

Though one Vermont utility is offering generous incentives to promote solar project, the same isn’t true at other utility companies in the state — something homeowners and some legislators would like to see change as a way to promote the creation of more solar projects.

Oxholm chooses to run again

VERGENNES — Vergennes resident Thelma “Kitty” Oxholm is no stranger to winning elections. She earned four terms on the Vergennes city council in the 1990s, and then two terms as city mayor between 2000 and 2004.

In 2006, Oxholm, a longtime special educator at Vergennes Union High School who then spent a decade coordinating special education services for Addison Northwest Supervisory Union before retiring last year, won one of two Addison-3 district seats in the Vermont House of Representatives, running as a Republican.

Economy puts stress on victims of violence

ADDISON COUNTY — Advocates for victims and survivors of domestic and sexual violence in Addison County are anecdotally reporting that the number and severity of reported assaults is on the rise, and groups that support these vulnerable Vermonters say the economic recession is making life more difficult for battered women.

Time for an auction: Lions Club, artists team up for fund-raiser

VERGENNES — Tick, tock: “It’s about time” that arts lovers and community-minded local residents chipped in for a good cause.

That’s the thinking (and the theme) behind a silent auction the Vergennes Lions Club is organizing to raise money for its community service efforts. This week’s auction will peddle the wares of 23 local artists, each tasked with creating at least one clock to donate for the charity auction.

College to host TEDx conference on 'impact'

MIDDLEBURY — How much can you learn in less than 18 minutes?

When the popular lecture series TEDx comes to town on Oct. 2, the Middlebury College community will answer that question.

At the conference, about a dozen speakers will address the theme “How we started from idea to impact.” In keeping with the spirit of the world famous Technology, Entertainment Design (TED) conferences, which the TEDx series grew out of, the speakers will limit their talks to 18 minutes or shorter.

Folklife Center eyes Balkan immigrants

MIDDLEBURY — During the 1990s, Vermont saw an influx of refugees resettled from countries on the Balkan region of southeastern Europe — specifically Bosnia, Serbia and Albania. Those refugees, many of whom are now firmly established in the state, continue to observe traditions and memories from their home countries.

The Vermont Folklife Center hopes to share its collection of traditions and stories of Vermonters from the Balkans with a new website, funded by a $5,000 grant that it recently received from the Vermont Humanities Council.

Radio project probes out-of-state prisons

MIDDLEBURY — Currently there are more than 2,000 people serving time in jail for state crimes committed in Vermont. More than a quarter of that number are housed in prisons more than 1,000 miles from where their crimes took place.

Each year, between 550 and 600 Vermont prisoners are held in privately run jails in Tennessee and Kentucky.

Sewage plant bond up for a vote

VERGENNES/PANTON — The Vergennes Panton Water District Board has decided to request voter approval to upgrade the aging water treatment plant on Arnold Bay in Panton. This treatment facility supplies water to Vergennes and Panton as well as customers in Ferrisburgh, Waltham and Addison.

Bray pushes farm issues in campaign

NEW HAVEN — State Rep. Christopher Bray, D-New Haven, has been traveling around the state as a candidate for lieutenant governor and has seen a lot of things that make him happy — the Green Mountains, productive farms and active schools, to mention a few things.

But there one thing in particular that brings a smile to his face.

“There is nothing that makes me happier than to see someone with a good job,” Bray said in a recent interview with the Addison Independent.
