Bristol plan enters final stretch

BRISTOL — After almost a decade of helping shape a proposed town plan, the Bristol Planning Commission may have considered the document for the last time on Tuesday.

At its monthly meeting, the planning commission unanimously OK’d the 42 revisions proposed by the selectboard.

New dental center eyed for Bristol's downtown

BRISTOL — For roughly half a decade, a local nonprofit has sought to set up the Addison County Dental Center, a dental facility for low- to moderate-income citizens. Now, with Bristol health facilities shifting spaces and one clinic applying for special federal status, chair of the center’s board, Peg Martin, thinks the nonprofit’s stars might finally align in Bristol.

Claudon's boatworks business runs like clockwork

WEYBRIDGE –– Michael Claudon managed to combine three of his passions –– antique clocks, economics and wooden boats –– into one successful business venture.

Claudon started Snake Mountain Boatworks in 2008, opening it for customers in 2011. Before that, he worked with antique clocks and taught economics at Middlebury College. He explained that the jump from restoring clocks to wooden boats is not as farfetched as it seems.

Vermont dragon boat team crowned world champs

ADDISON COUNTY/HONG KONG — When the crew at Dragonheart Vermont arrived in Hong Kong for the International Dragon Boat Federation’s Club Crew World Championships, the team of breast cancer survivors was overwhelmed.

Under a sky filled with ultra modern skyscrapers, the grueling water conditions were unlike anything the team had ever encountered. Adding to the team’s apprehension, a typhoon slammed the southern Chinese territory the weekend before the races.

Group to shine light on domestic violence

MIDDLEBURY — Bristol-based artist Stephanie Larsen literally dreamed up a fundraiser to benefit local domestic violence awareness programs.

Larsen, a domestic abuse survivor herself, was asleep when she imagined how to generate some cash for the Addison County Council Against Domestic and Sexual Violence (ACCADSV). In her reverie, she saw a group of wonderfully painted lamps and shades illuminating a banner that stated, “Shine a light on domestic violence.”

City OKs new policy for park displays

VERGENNES — The Vergennes City Council on Tuesday, July 17, unanimously approved new rules for use of the city green for religious displays and special events, a policy that sets a specific application process and timeline for placement of such features as the longstanding Christian nativity scene.

ACSU fills 25 positions, prepares for school year

MIDDLEBURY — The Addison Central Supervisory Union (ACSU) will start the 2012-2013 academic year with 25 new faces, including a substantially revamped central office that will soon be led by a new superintendent.

New central office hires include Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Development Carol Fenimore; Business Manager Laura Nassau; Linda Darrow, coordinator of early childhood services; Jason LaMora, director of technology; and Susan English, associate director of student services.

Exchange program brings students to Vermont

ADDISON — Snake Mountain was host to many unfamiliar visitors on Monday afternoon. Two dozen foreign and American students hiked up the mountain’s slope, many students of whom had a mere 48 hours earlier been on the other side of the Pacific Ocean en-route to a three-week study-trip to Vermont.

These 25 high school students traveled thousands of miles to participate in the nonprofit, educational program Green Across the Pacific.

Butterwick Farm hosts visit from Brown Swiss convention

CORNWALL — Miles off the main road in Cornwall one morning in early July, a crowd of dairy farmers from around the country examined the Brown Swiss cows at Butterwick Farm.

All were attendees at the Brown Swiss Association National Convention, held at Shelburne Farms from July 4 to 7. John and Lisa Roberts, owners of Butterwick Farm, welcomed the visitors to their farm to get a taste of dairy farming in the Green Mountain State.

Bristol's Bobcat brews a Vermont beer for flood relief

VERMONT — Amidst the thick muck and agricultural destruction at the University of Vermont’s Borderview Farm in Alburgh last September, walked a seemingly unlikely pair: UVM agronomist Heather Darby and Bobcat Café and Brewery brew master Mark Magiera.

For several years, the two have been studying hops together. And as they strolled through the UVM hop, barley and wheat farm, they couldn’t help but think about the many farmers who were reeling from the devastation wrought by Tropical Storm Irene.
