Health officials warn about fentanyl-laced heroin

ADDISON COUNTY — Fentanyl is being sold and packaged as heroin and state officials say just a few grains of the pure drug “can stop your breathing and kill.”

The Vermont State Police issued a statement Feb. 5 urging Vermonters not to inject fentanyl, or any other drug that has not been prescribed by a doctor.

MIDDLEBURY — Ted Davis finished just 43 votes shy of winning a spot on the Middlebury selectboard last year.

The retired insurance company executive and current chairman of the Middlebury Development Review Board is burning shoe leather this winter in an effort to prevail in a March 4 election in which eight residents are competing for three selectboard seats that are up for grabs.

Independent takes home 21 awards from regional newspaper contest

BOSTON — The New England Newspaper and Press Association honored the Addison County Independent with 21 awards at the regional organization’s annual convention in Boston this past weekend. In the Better Newspaper Contest, the Addy Indy won gold in four categories when judged against larger weekly publications of more than 6,000 circulation from around New England.

Who is Erika Sloan? Middlebury student competes on 'Jeopardy!'

MIDDLEBURY — A Middlebury College sophomore will appear on the Jeopardy! College Championship, a version of the popular television game show hosted by Alex Trebek.

Erika Sloane, 19, was one of 15 undergraduates from across the country selected to compete in the tournament, which is open only to full-time undergraduates with no prior degrees.

“I grew up watching Jeopardy!, and I always wanted to be on it,” said Sloane, a native of Simsbury, Conn.

Survey says: Majority in Cornwall oppose pipeline

CORNWALL — A big majority of Cornwall residents are opposed to Vermont Gas Systems’ proposed “Phase II” project that would extend a natural gas pipeline from Middlebury to the International Paper mill in Ticonderoga, N.Y., according to the results of a townwide survey recently circulated by the town’s selectboard.

Sustainable Living Expo seeks vendors, volunteers

MIDDLEBURY — The Addison County Relocalization Network (ACORN) and the Acorn Energy Co-op will present the first-ever Sustainable Living Expo on Saturday, March 29, at Middlebury Union High School, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The Sustainable Living Expo builds on the success of the previous Green Energy Expos, which were attended by nearly 1,000 residents and local business people.

Panton considers having selectboard choose town clerk, treasurer rather than voters

PANTON — Panton residents on Town Meeting Day will decide whether they will continue to elect their own town clerk, treasurer and delinquent tax collector, or give the Panton selectboard the power to appoint people to those town offices.

That choice will be framed on March 4 as a potential change to the town’s land grant charter. Per state law, if voters back that change, which is being recommended and put forth by the selectboard, the Vermont Legislature would still have to approve it before it could take effect.
