Feds detail new dairy insurance program

Montpelier, VT— This morning at Fairmont Farms in East Montpelier, Senator Patrick Leahy and Representative Peter Welch encouraged Vermont’s dairy farmers to enroll in the new Margin Protection Program (MPP) and announced a series of workshops for interested participants.

MPP is a voluntary insurance program included in the new Farm Bill that protects dairy farmers from market fluctuations in milk prices.  The program replaces the expired Milk Income Loss Contract Program (MILC).

Addison-4 hopefuls to debate Oct. 22

BRISTOL — The Addison Independent this Wednesday, Oct. 22, will sponsor a debate among the four candidates vying for the two Vermont House seats representing the Addison-4 district. The debate will begin at 7 p.m. in Bristol’s Holley Hall and is expected to wrap up by 9 p.m.

WFAD silent; search for parts continues

Serial burglar Ritchie gets 13 years to life, earful from victims at sentencing hearing

MIDDLEBURY — After hearing emotional testimony from several victims on Friday morning in Addison Superior Court’s criminal division, Judge Robert Mello approved a plea agreement that sentenced Raymond Ritchie, 38, of Addison to 13 years to life in prison on each of a long list of counts stemming from a 2012 and 2013 crime spree.

Hospital, college on guard for Ebola

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury is a long way from West Africa or even Dallas, Texas, where the deadly Ebola virus has gained a toehold and claimed victims.

But with the town of Middlebury and Middlebury College being popular destinations for international travelers, local health care providers and institutions are taking precautions to minimize the chances of Ebola making its way to Addison County, while also setting up protocols to ensure that any infected patient is segregated from the general population.

Addison-3 candidates share views at city debate

VERGENNES — The four candidates for the two Addison-3 seats representing Vergennes, Ferrisburgh, Addison, Panton and Waltham in the Vermont House of Representatives this past Wednesday joined House candidates from around the county at a forum at the Vergennes Opera House devoted to economic development.

The Addison County Economic Development Corp. and Vision to Action Vermont (V2AVT.org) co-sponsored the event, which drew 12 of the 13 county candidates in contested races.

ALS patient looks on the bright side, finds help

FERRISBURGH — Back in 2011, Ferrisburgh resident David Allen began to have trouble lifting the mail he had to deliver for his longtime job with the Middlebury Post Office.

His back was also bothering him, especially after the post office switched to a standard delivery vehicle and Allen couldn’t use his own car.

Residents sound off on Mt. Abe bond plan

BRISTOL — Reactions were mixed from the more than 30 Addison Northeast Supervisory Union residents who turned out for a special Mount Abraham Union Middle/High School Board meeting on the proposed $33 million bond to finance a substantial renovation of the school.

Most spoke in favor of the project, while others raised concerns about the price tag and the necessity of some of the more ambitious parts of the proposal.
