Police ask for help with toy drive

BRISTOL / MIDDLEBURY — The Bristol Police Department is teaming up with the Middlebury Police Department for their annual holiday toy drive. Anyone wishing to donate toys can deliver them to either department over the next couple of weeks.

The toys will be delivered by uniformed officers on Christmas Day to children and families throughout Addison County.

The police departments of Middlebury and Bristol invite local residents to join them in delivering a positive Christmas experience to families and children in need throughout our communities.

It's time to put out your birdfeeders

MONTPELIER — With winter weather now taking hold, Vermonters are readying their bird feeders. But before residents put up their avian offerings, Vermont Fish & Wildlife recommends a review of the bird feeding basics.

“Birds of all species have very interesting behaviors, shapes, and plumage, and being close to them to be able to observe this is a great source of enjoyment throughout the winter months,” said John Buck, Vermont Fish & Wildlife’s migratory bird biologist.

4-H dairy challenge winners named

BURLINGTON — The annual 4-H Dairy Challenge on Nov. 19 provided an opportunity for 83 4-H participants to explore dairy-related topics and compete with fellow 4-H’ers in buzzer rounds to test their dairy knowledge.

The event, sponsored by the University of Vermont (UVM) 4-H, took place on the UVM campus in Burlington. In addition to the dairy challenge, the 4-H’ers also attended learning sessions on rumination, milking systems, diseases, soils and forages, followed by a written quiz to assess their comprehension.

Service now available to locate lost insurance policies

5-megawatt solar array proposed for Weybridge could equal largest in Vermont

WEYBRIDGE — A Minneapolis developer is readying a proposal to build one of the state’s largest solar arrays in Weybridge.

Ecos Energy LLC sent a letter to Weybridge residents on Nov. 29 saying it is exploring development of two ground-mounted solar power arrays on an open field between Quaker Village Road and Field Days Road. Most of the 73-acre property is in Weybridge (58 acres), and 15 acres is in New Haven.

Big growth and a big vision are powering start-up educational software firm

MIDDLEBURY — A little more than a year ago, the SchoolHack Solutions had just one official employee and it was beta testing its personalized learning software with three schools in Vermont.

Today the Middlebury company boasts nine employees and its “LiFT” software has been adopted by 20 Vermont schools and a growing number nationwide.

And just recently the Vermont Economic Development Authority awarded the startup $350,000 in working capital through a low-interest loan.

Vermonters explore World Challenges in Sheldon exhibit

The Henry Sheldon Museum in Middlebury, presents World Challenges highlighting Climate Change, the Refugee/Immigration Crisis, and the Syrian Civil War. The exhibit opened on Nov. 15, and will run through Jan. 14, 2017.

Scientist explains how Lake Champlain became so polluted

ST. ALBANS — There are six key factors over the course of history that brought Lake Champlain to the point of impairment and at which the state needed legislation to address water quality issues, according to Mike Winslow, a staff scientist for Lake Champlain Committee for over 15 years.

Winslow, who was at one time an environmental education teacher at Keewaydin Environmental Education Center, last month spoke about the history of the Lake Champlain watershed and how water quality reached its current levels at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute in St. Albans.

Driver who killed bicyclist sentenced to 7-16 years

MIDDLEBURY — Twenty months ago mourners at the funeral of beloved local resident Kelly Boe filled the pews and spilled out of the doors at St. Mary’s Church.

On Monday locals packed the house for Boe again. This time it was at the Addison County Courthouse, where the man who was driving drunk when he struck and killed Boe was sentenced to a substantial jail term.

Judge Samuel Hoar sent 29-year-old Nathan C. Dearing to prison for seven-and-a-half to 16 years.
