ANESU school volunteers must now be fingerprinted

BRISTOL — Addison Northeast School district administrators is alerting the public that there is a new process for all who wish to volunteer in the schools: Bristol, Lincoln, Monkton, Beeman and Robinson elementary schools and Mount Abraham Union High School. This applies to anyone who plans to volunteer, chaperone a field trip, or work with students at any point in the school year.

Evergreen Preschool celebrates 35 years serving Vergennes

VERGENNES — Evergreen Preschool is celebrating 35 years of service to young children and families in the Vergennes area.

Evergreen has cared for and nurtured more than 500 children in the past three and a half decades. The current board of directors includes two founding members, Katrina Matthews of Vergennes and Susan Torncello of Shelburne.

Red Sox honor recent VUHS grad

BOSTON — Sophia Parker of Vergennes was recognized as a recipient of the Vermont Red Sox Service Scholarship during a pregame ceremony at Fenway Park before the Red Sox-White Sox game on Aug. 5. The program awarded students from public high schools across Vermont with $1,000 scholarships towards their college education based on academic performance, financial aid eligibility, and demonstrated community service.

Volunteers complete first segment of Trail Around Bristol

BRISTOL — Bristol residents working to create a trail system around Bristol reported that they’ve completed their first project: extending and improving the cross country trail behind Mount Abraham Union High School.

“We continue to be so impressed by the enthusiasm in the area,” said Porter Knight, the Bristol Recreation Club board member who is spearheading the trails initiative. “We had people from elementary age to their mid-70s helping on the trail. And I had feedback from several people saying it was a ton of fun.

Open Door Clinic loses key health care funding

Vergennes Day kicks off its 36th year this Friday, Aug. 25, with the monthly Vergennes Arts Walk from 5 to 8 p.m. and a street dance on the City Green featuring the music of “The Hitmen” from 7 to 10 p.m. The kick-off street dance is sponsored by the Masons’ Dorchester Lodge 1 F&AM.

Department of Public Service rejects New Haven energy plan

NEW HAVEN — New Haven continues to pioneer in its engagements with renewable energy development.

It is among the first towns to have submitted a hopeful Act 174-compliant energy plan to the Department of Public Service.

Last month, it also became the first town to have its energy plan rejected.

“Of course, we’re disappointed,” said New Haven selectboard Chair Kathy Barrett.

Ferrisburgh selectboard adopts town plan

FERRISBURGH — After a multi-year process Ferrisburgh has a new town plan. The Ferrisburgh selectboard made it official on Aug. 15 by unanimously adopting the plan as proposed by the Ferrisburgh Planning Commission.

The plan creates eight “Planning Areas” and makes recommendations for land use policies and actions for each.

Wheeling resigns from Ferrisburgh zoning post

FERRISBURGH — Longtime Ferrisburgh zoning administrator Ken Wheeling resigned his post in a letter to the Ferrisburgh selectboard that the town received on Aug. 14.

Wheeling, 79, had since July 17 been on what Ferrisburgh selectboard Chairwoman Loretta Lawrence described “as an indefinite leave of absence” for undisclosed reasons.
