NPR's 'All Things Considered' host Robert Siegel to talk in Middlebury

MIDDLEBURY — Robert Siegel, co-host of National Public Radio’s “All Things Considered” daily news program, will reflect on his career in the news and the journalistic changes he has seen along the way in a talk at Middlebury College on November 1 at 7 p.m.

Siegel is senior host of NPR’s award-winning evening news magazine. With 40 years of experience working in radio news, Siegel hosts the country’s most-listened-to, afternoon-drive-time news radio program and reports on stories and happenings all over the globe.

Mount Abe students share their views on old building; renovation bond vote looms

BRISTOL — It’s lunchtime at Mount Abraham Union High School and the large cafeteria is abuzz with students eating, chatting, laughing and catching a few fun moments with friends before the next bell rings and they troop off to classes.

More than anything, it’s loud. Deafeningly so. But it’s a lively loud, with so many students happy to be out of class, get some food, sit with buddies and take a break.

Youth deer hunting weekend coming Nov. 4-5

MONTPELIER — The Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department is urging young deer hunters to help scientific management of Vermont’s deer population by bringing the deer they take during the state’s Nov. 4 and 5 youth deer hunt to a biological reporting station.

Witches. The mean ones we know from their clammy green skin, long pointy noses covered with warts, sharp crooked teeth and chilling cackle. The nice ones comfort us with their rosy cheeks, warm smile and sparkling eyes. What do they have in common? Magic.

Police on lookout for those who made criminal racial threats in town

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police are voicing concern about what they described as three recent, separate reports of “racial epithets directed at non-white pedestrians.”

In one case, police said a white man riding in a passing car allegedly shouted a racist insult at a pedestrian. In the other cases, it was a white man who allegedly approached pedestrians and shouted racist insults at them, according to police.

Guardians needed for kids in courts

MIDDLEBURY — State and local judiciary officials are desperately trying to recruit more volunteers to represent the interests of Addison County children who are part of the mounting number of juvenile cases flooding the court system.

The volunteers would act as guardians ad litem (GAL) — community members who make sure the voices of children get heard in court proceedings. These are children who come to the attention of the court for abuse or neglect, behavior issues or in some cases delinquency.

Fortunately, it will be more of a straight line than a curve for ç, who next month will officially begin his tenure as new executive director of the Addison County Economic Development Corporation, or ACEDC.

Kenney joins the ACEDC with 16 years of experience administering Vermont Economic Progress Council programs that each year funnel millions of dollars in tax incentives to qualifying businesses seeking to grow in the Green Mountain State.

Meet the chef: Bill Snell from Tourterelle in New Haven

Kitchens can be stressful places. Sharp knifes fiercely chop, dice and mince the day’s ingredients. Hot pots bubble on a flaming stove. The chefs and cooks must work efficiently together, without getting in each other’s way, to quickly produce beautiful dishes for hungry customers.

A spill here, a slip there… could be the difference between great success and utter catastrophe. So it’s easy to understand how tensions can run a little hot.

But at Tourterelle in New Haven, head chef Bill Snell tries to keep it cool.
