State police report gun thefts in county

ADDISON COUNTY — Vermont State Police are investigating a rash of firearm thefts in the county. Two thefts last week bring the total to three since Sept. 20, each in a separate town.

Police responded to Shellhouse Mountain Road in Ferrisburgh Oct. 5 where a man said he had left his .45 caliber pistol, in its carrying case, on the back of his truck and then drove away, causing it to fall off. Police said they spoke with someone who saw the gun case on the side of the road. Police found the case, but the gun was not in it.

Middlebury to host last Arts Walk of the season today

MIDDLEBURY — The 2014 Middlebury Arts Walk season finale will be held on Friday, Oct. 10, from 5 to 7 p.m. Middlebury Arts Walk is a free event (for artists, venues, and attendees) and is held the second Friday of the month from May to October. In many cases the art is on display all month long — not just that evening.

New Arts Walk Artists

The Middlebury Arts Walk committee endeavors to introduce new and different artists throughout the season. There are several artists who are first-time Arts Walk exhibitors this month:

Orwell man charged with shooting after arguing over a horse

ORWELL — An Orwell man is scheduled to be arraigned later today in Addison Superior Court, criminal division, on aggravated assault and reckless endangerment charges after he allegedly fired a gun in the direction of some neighbors during an argument over a horse.

Jeffrey A. Bradish, 51, was ordered held on $15,000 bail at the Chittenden County Correctional Center on Thursday, Oct. 9, following his arrest.

County House candidates to debate economy in Vergennes

VERGENNES — An Oct. 15 debate on economic issues has been scheduled for the 14 candidates in contested Addison County elections for the Vermont House of Representatives.

The public is invited to the Vergennes Opera House at 7 p.m. this coming Wednesday for an event scheduled to last 90 minutes.

The co-sponsors of the event, the Addison County Economic Development Corp. (ACEDC) and Vision to Action Vermont (V2AVT.org), are referring to it as a forum.

Foundation given tennis facility as a gift

MIDDLEBURY — One of the state’s premier philanthropic foundations on Wednesday announced that it will take ownership of the Middlebury Indoor Tennis facility.

Officials at the Vermont Community Foundation in Middlebury said the gift by MIT founders David and Eleanor Ignat will enable the VCF to further its goal of serving the community — in particular by expanding efforts to improve the physical health of individuals in the community.

Shumlin appoints Holmes to state health care board

MONTPELIER — Gov. Peter Shumlin appointed Jessica Holmes, a Middlebury College professor of Economics, including Health Economics, to serve on the five-member Green Mountain Care Board. She will serve a six-year term, replacing outgoing member Karen Hein of Jacksonville, Vt., whose term expired.

Otter Valley thespians invited to perform at Fringe in Scotland

BRANDON — Otter Valley Union High School’s award-winning Walking Stick Theatre group has been chosen to perform in the world-renowned Fringe Festival in Scotland next summer.

The honor is free, but getting 20 student-actors to Edinburgh in August will cost $126,000, and the group officially launched its fundraising campaign last month. According to OV Theater Director Jeff Hull, the goal is to raise about half of the total cost.

The Outside Story: Some geese stay north, but it's complicated

This has always been my perception of bird migration in the fall: The days grow short and cool and then, one day, I notice a V-shaped caravan of Canada geese flying southward. Then another and another. Within a few weeks of that first sighting, I hear their melancholy call one final time for the season. Then they, and all the summer birds, are gone. It’s a mass exodus for warmer climes, over and done in the blink of an eye and long before the snow flies.
