Home Health & Hospice: Filling a void for 48 years

NEW HAVEN — It was 48 years ago that a group of concerned Addison County residents saw a void in local health care system. There was a lack of professional community care services for patients wanting to heal away from the hospital — where stays were often lengthy for post-surgery monitoring.

Middlebury OKs rail deal again — with opposition

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury selectboard on Tuesday affirmed two key agreements with the Vermont Agency of Transportation governing the looming $40 million replacement of two downtown bridges, and also agreed to hire an independent engineer to review the project plans to make sure they are sound.

Man killed in a Middlebury house fire Wednesday

MIDDLEBURY — A 96-year-old man lost his life in a fire at his home on Murdock Court in Middlebury on Wednesday evening.

The Middlebury Fire Department received a call reporting a fire at 7 Murdock Court — off Weybridge Street — at a little past 7:30 p.m. The call came from a family member who came home and found the house filled with smoke. He informed authorities that the man may be inside.

ANWSD to hear teacher salary pitch

VERGENNES — Teacher representatives of the Addison Northwest Teachers’ Association (ANTA) are scheduled to present their proposals regarding salary, benefits including health insurance, and grievance procedures for the 2017-2018 school year at the next meeting of the negotiation committee. That meeting will take place next Monday, Dec. 18, at 5 p.m. in the Vergennes Union High School library.

Cross-country trip healthy for couple

VERMONT — The cross-country trip is 10,000 miles long, having wound its way to the northern Midwest, south to the Corn Belt, west across the plains to the Rockies, south through desert, and west again to the Pacific.  We are off the road for a while in Santa Cruz.

Middlebury selectboard eyeing increase in infrastructure spending

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury municipal officials have spent the past several years diligently pinching pennies when it comes to the town’s property tax rate, but they will soon consider a sizable increase in investments in the town’s equipment, buildings and infrastructure.

The Middlebury Infrastructure Committee on Thursday agreed to recommend a fiscal year 2018 capital improvement budget of $948,418, representing an increase of $78,000 — or about a penny on the municipal tax rate — compared to this year.

Addison town plan OK'd, with solar caveat

ADDISON — The Addison selectboard has approved an updated town plan, a move that will allow the Addison Planning Commission to begin work on new zoning regulations.

The town plan replaces a 2014 interim plan and lays the groundwork for new zoning laws that would allow for smaller lots in the town’s biggest zoning district.

It also creates the basis for new regulations at the town level on solar arrays and wind power generators. The town now has interim regulations on the siting of solar arrays that the selectboard adopted in July.

Lions gather toys and glasses

VERGENNES — There are numerous barrels around the Bristol and Vergennes area placed by the Vergennes Lions Club to help support the Marine Corps League’s Toys for Kids program. Every new, unwrapped toy will be going to children in this area. Money donated will be used to purchase gift cards for needy teenagers. At the last Vergennes Lions Club meeting, Betty Kipp, representing the Vergennes Community Forum, presented a check to President Jim McClay to help toward the gift cards.
