Public reviews Mount Abe building repair needs

BRISTOL — Dozens of parents and community members in the Addison Northeast Supervisory Union attended an open house Wednesday evening at Mount Abraham Union High School to discuss renovating the building.

The open house, hosted by a committee charged by the school board to develop ideas for what the renovated school should look like, provided ANeSU residents with the opportunity to brainstorm together, as well as question the architect hired by the school board.

Middlebury area ambulance service seeks funding from towns

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury Regional EMS has decided to resurrect its practice of asking for Town Meeting Day contributions from the 10 towns it serves, money the organization will place in a fund for future capital needs.

Middlebury Regional EMS — once known as the Middlebury Volunteer Ambulance Association — began requesting Town Meeting Day contributions in 1998. The organization used those funds — an average of $25,319 per year — to help solidify its operating budget.

MIDDLEBURY — When June rolls around, Nancie Dunn makes sure her shop is stocked with paintings and cards of Vermont landscapes, and especially locally sourced pottery. That’s because Dunn, who has owned the Sweet Cecily shop in Main Street for the past 27 years, has picked up on trends in business that she can now anticipate as the warmer months approach.

MALT to raise $490,000 to conserve Weybridge land

WEYBRIDGE — The Middlebury Area Land Trust (MALT) is trying to raise $490,000 to buy and permanently conserve a strategic, 101-acre parcel of Middlebury College-owned land located north of Route 23 in Weybridge, property that would be maintained as an important wildlife habitat as well as for farming.

City's municipal tax rate up 9 cents

VERGENNES — Vergennes aldermen on Tuesday made final their decision to adopt a $2,087,959 city budget that means a 9-cent increase in the municipal tax rate, of which 7 cents will pay for the new Vergennes police station.

The new rate aldermen adopted on Tuesday to solely fund city services, not schools, is 72.5 cents, up from the current 63.5-cent rate.

Vermont Gas gets final permits, but needs many easements

ADDISON COUNTY — Vermont Gas Systems announced Tuesday that it has secured all the permits it needs for Phase I of the Addison-Rutland Natural Gas Project, but the company has little more than half of the land easements it needs to complete the project.

The South Burlington company had been waiting on permits from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and had already secured all necessary state permits.

German choirboy returns to 2nd home in Middlebury

MIDDLEBURY — Manu Feiber has been making regular visits to Middlebury from his home in Germany every summer since he was an exchange student here in 2003 and 2004. When he made the trans-Atlantic visit this month it was a little different than usual.

This time, Feiber brought with him 50 members of the prestigious Stuttgart Hymnus Boys’ Choir.

Eastman sees a clear path to the Statehouse

ORWELL — Many political candidates find themselves competing in multiple elections before finally winning a seat in the Vermont House. Some never quite muster enough votes to get in.

Then there’s Alyson Eastman, a first-time candidate who finds herself with no competitors in her bid for the Addison-Rutland seat representing Benson, Orwell, Shoreham and Whiting. Barring a successful write-in challenge, Eastman, an Orwell independent, will take the place of Rep. Will Stevens, I-Shoreham, when the Legislature reconvenes next January.
