Route 116 paving will delay some drivers in Bristol, Starksboro next week

STARKSBORO/BRISTOL — Drivers may encounter delays when traveling along Route 116 between Bristol and Starksboro this week as repaving of the highway continues.

Construction officials said that the week of Oct. 23 will mark the last week of paving for the six-and-a-half-mile section of road between Bristol village near the Lord’s Prayer Rock to just south of Robinson School in Starksboro village. Final paving is scheduled to start Monday in Bristol and progress north, weather permitting.

Helen Porter will transform to medieval castle for Halloween

MIDDLEBURY — After twelve years of lighted outdoor pumpkin patches at Helen Porter Nursing Home, organizers have decided to change things up a bit this year.

Helen Porter will be transforming their lobby and community room into a Medieval Castle and will welcome the public on Friday, Oct. 27, from 6-8:30 p.m. While there will still be plenty of pumpkins to carve, the event will happen chiefly indoors.

Organizers have also extended the event to cover a second night on Saturday, Oct. 28, from 6-8:30 p.m. Attendance is free.

City Legion to host trunk or treat

VERGENNES — Trick or treating in rural parts of Addison County can pose a challenge. Over the years, trunk or treat events in town centers have provided families with an alternative to parents driving for miles, children walking on roads with no streetlights, and the hit or miss search for good treats.

The American Legion Auxiliary Post 14 in Vergennes will be holding their trunk or treat and costume dance party on Sunday, Oct. 29, at 1 p.m.

Middlebury gets spooky as Halloween draws near

MIDDLEBURY — Better practice your cackle, dig out your best wig, find a vessel to collect treats within and head downtown on Sunday, Oct. 29. Yet again, the Better Middlebury Partnership will bring an outstanding Halloween event for kids of all ages and adults to the town of Middlebury.

Hay bales, festive games, face painting and costumes will decorate the town green for the tenth annual Middlebury Spooktacular. Rain or shine, the green will be alive with music, dancing, costumes and tasty treats like cider donuts, loved by all ages.

Fuel assistance available to low income Vermonters

WATERBURY — AHS Secretary Al Gobeille and DCF Commissioner Ken Schatz recently announced that Vermont anticipates receiving approximately $18.9 million in federal funds for this year’s Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) also known as Seasonal Fuel Assistance. This is a three percent increase over last year. The funds will help about 20,000 low-income Vermont households to heat their homes this winter by paying a portion of their home heating bills.

Rule change means more help for addicts

MONTPELIER — In what he called a sign of progress in combating the opioid crisis, Gov. Phil Scott announced this past Monday, Oct. 16, that the state has moved to bolster the ranks of substance abuse counselors by paring back the licensing requirements.

The move was spurred by legislators’ recommendations to the Office of Professional Regulation after hearing that the state’s arcane rules were hindering qualified counselors from landing jobs here, said Sen. Claire Ayer, D-Addison.

Area rowers compete in James Wakefield Rescue Row

VERGENNES — Every year in the fall, the Lake Champlain Maritime Museum holds the James Wakefield Rescue Row — a competitive series of rowing races among youth rowers. This year, under overcast and drizzly skies, 155 youth rowers from Vergennes, Mt. Abraham, Champlain Valley Union, South Burlington, Rice Memorial, North Haven (Maine), Rockland (Maine), and Belfast (Maine) high and middle schools came to compete in the races.

Cornwall's Sunrise Orchards gets boost to help grow apple business

CORNWALL — Sunrise Orchards Inc. of Cornwall recently received a portion of the $9.9 million in financing that the Vermont Economic Development Authority approved last quarter to help support commercial, agricultural, energy and small business projects in Vermont. The apple producer received its financing as part of nearly $3 million approved through VEDA’s agricultural loan program, the Vermont Agricultural Credit Corporation, of VACC.
