Dairymen call for new pricing plan

audet(2).jpg

By KATHRYN FLAGG
ADDISON COUNTY — Dairy farmers around the country are rallying behind a price stabilization program that some dairy farmers hope could help reduce volatility in bulk milk prices, which plummeted this winter to a low of roughly $10 per hundredweight, $7 or $8 below the cost of production for Vermont farmers.

But with milk prices projected to rebound somewhat this fall, advocates for the new program say farmers need to move fast before rising bulk prices dissuade some dairymen from pushing for change.

MIDDLEBURY — Angus Barstow was in need of a haircut. But for the Middlebury youth, a haircut was easier said than done.

Middlebury selectmen eye water and sewer rates

By JOHN FLOWERS
MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury selectmen continue to look at ways to avert — or at least minimize — a boost in municipal water and sewer rates that may be needed to offset increasing expenses at a time of declining use of those services.

Town officials recently revealed the potential need to increase Middlebury’s water rate by around 20 percent — from the current $2.85 per 1,000 gallons used to $3.43 — in order to meet greater water department expenses in fiscal year 2010.

For Panton mom and son, military service runs in the family

nationalguardfamily(2).jpg

By JOHN FLOWERS
PANTON — It’s part of a longstanding ritual for military recruits: Saying goodbye to mom before more than two months of boot camp in a faraway state.

But Vermont Army National Guard enlistee David Hawkins won’t be saying goodbye to his mom when he ships out for Fort Jackson in South Carolina in August; he’ll be saying “see you there.”

That’s because David, 18, and his mom Paula, 40, have both signed up for eight-year stints in the Guard last year and will soon head out for basic training.

Planned respite home would aid the terminally ill

By JOHN FLOWERS

MIDDLEBURY — A group of Addison County residents is laying the groundwork for a new respite care home that would provide support services for dying patients and their families.

The nonprofit venture, called Addison Respite Care Home Ltd. (ARCH), would be located on land off Middle Road. A very preliminary plan calls for the approximately 3,000-square-foot facility to be equipped with two private bedrooms for terminally ill residents, along with related amenities and basic accommodations for family visitors.

MIDDLEBURY — Linda King was in 10th grade when she decided she’d had enough of school. It was during the early 1970s, and her parents were going through a divorce — too much domestic tension, confusion and distraction to feel comfortable in a classroom.

“I thought I knew everything,” King, a Cornwall resident, said last week. “I didn’t really like school.”

Lucioni paintings at college celebrate Vermont's pastoral landscape

By KATHRYN FLAGG

MIDDLEBURY — The view from the Middlebury College Museum of Art, gazing east, is a lovely one: in the foreground, a copse of trees stands between the college athletic fields, and the Green Mountains rise to gentle peaks in the distance.

This summer, the view inside the museum is arguably lovelier still, as the college celebrates the landscapes paintings and etchings of celebrated Italian-American artist Luigi Lucioni.

Local representatives help override budget veto

By JOHN FLOWERS
MONTPELIER — The overwhelming majority of Addison County lawmakers on Tuesday voted with the majority in a successful override of Gov. James Douglas’s budget veto, thereby setting in stone a spending plan for fiscal year 2010.

The House voted 100 to 50 — the bare minimum two-thirds majority necessary — to override Douglas’s veto of the $4.5 billion spending plan. It was the first budget veto in the state’s history.
