Bristol teen center cultivates garden

BRISTOL — Caroline Cote, 13, is a quick study.

When she led the way down the long, narrow garden plot behind the Bristol Hub Teen Center, she rattled off the long list of plants in the garden — carrots and zucchini, lettuce and leeks, and tomatoes on the vine just starting to ripen.

In mid-August, the garden was a riot of growth. Purple and green cabbage plants had unfurled their leaves in wide circles. The broccoli was thriving. Purple beans dangled from the bean plants, waiting to be plucked, and a new round of squash flowers bloomed.

Community garden takes root in Middlebury

MIDDLEBURY — A brewery’s backyard might seem like an unlikely location for a community garden. But when Otter Creek Brewing volunteered the land behind their facility in Middlebury last year, county residents of all shapes and sizes jumped on board to begin planning what is now the Otter Creek Organic Community Garden.

CORNWALL — For Liz Holm, gardening is a creative outlet, and though she says she is no artist, her beautifully structured Cornwall garden is pretty enough for any garden painting.

Holm’s garden spans across her backyard in several well-kept plots, each home to a variety of flowers and trees that serves specific purposes.

BRIDPORT — Beds of color dot the yard around the Howlett farmhouse. Across the road farm vehicles sit dormant below two large silos and a carved “Howlett” sign on the barn. The dairy farm is retired now, but the garden belies an ongoing dedication to the land: it is sprawling and colorful, brimming with fruits, vegetables and flowers.

“My father bought this farm when I was in high school,” said Esther Howlett. “We’ve been farming it since 1945.”

SHOREHAM — Martha Lapham of Shoreham is modest about her gardens — several plots of brimming flowerbeds, a vegetable garden and various climbing and potted plants. But as unassuming as the longtime gardener may be, the lively blooms on her Shoreham property speak for themselves.

ADDISON — “Seven years ago this was just forest,” said Carol Miller, pointing out toward Lake Champlain.

Now a spacious lawn slopes down to the water, interrupted by scattered shade trees and Adirondack chairs. An artfully weathered wooden house with blue trim perches on a rise, with panoramic views stretching up Lake Champlain. Garden beds surround the house and punctuate the lawn, bordering stone paths and cradling the pool. Most are behind the house, where they are sheltered from the wind.

ADDISON — Nestled behind a distinguished brick house is Alice van Tuyl’s garden, where flowers gather around a rock-lined pond and grape vines creep over a wooden arbor.

“I’ve always been interested in flowers — always had some around,” said Van Tuyl.

Her love of flowers began when she was a young girl visiting her grandmother in Rhinebeck, N.Y. She was from New York City, but she would spend her summers in her grandmother’s garden on the Hudson River.

“She was an avid gardener, so that sort of began it all,” said Van Tuyl.

Heifers, handlers rise to the challenge

NEW HAVEN — Heifers at the 4-H Youth Dairy Show Conformation Class at the Addison County Fair and Field Days are scrutinized on almost every physical trait — from their big wet noses to their tasseled tails, the animals are judged based on an “ideal” for the breed.

But the heifer is not the only one feeling the heat. To be a champion, handlers age eight to 18 must train and groom their animals to perfection.

RIPTON – “This was the man was meant me; that he should come/So near his time, and miss it!”

So says Beatrice-Joanna in The Changeling, meeting Alsemero just after her father has promised her to another man. The tragedy, which includes a more comic subplot in a madhouse, played last week in the Little Theatre at the Bread Loaf School of English. It was this year’s major production at the school, bringing together a combined cast of professional actors and Bread Loaf graduate students.

Caught in a bind: county shelter buckles under influx of homeless cats

MIDDLEBURY — The Addison County Humane Society has rarely turned away an animal during its 34-year history as a safe haven for the lost, abandoned, abused or surrendered.

Now, however, the shelter is seeing a critical number of cats pouring into the facility at a rate that Executive Director Jackie Rose is concerned they cannot keep up with.

“We are facing a cat overpopulation crisis,” Rose said. “The number of cats and unwanted cats that are in our communities is reaching really epidemic proportions.”
