Editorial: Ferrisburgh says no, but PSB holds the cards

Posted on June 22, 2015 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

The Ferrisburgh selectboard took the bold action of rejecting three of five proposed solar arrays filed this past month saying that the proposed locations would pose “an extreme visual impact.” But there’s a problem: the town doesn’t have a lot of say. As in the case of all Vermont solar arrays, towns can express their approval or disapproval, but the Public Service Board holds all the cards.

Editorial: Smart move by the ACSU board

Posted on June 18, 2015 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

Last Friday, the ACSU Executive Board voted to pursue a proposal that could form a single consolidated K-12 district, if approved by voters in elections held as soon as next March. That unified district would operate a single, over-arching budget and handle operating decisions for the nine schools in the seven participating towns and be governed by a single school board.

Posted on June 18, 2015 |

Legislative Review: Baser supports pipeline plan

Posted on June 18, 2015 |
By Fred Baser

Next week the Public Service Board will hear testimony on the natural gas pipeline traveling through Addison County. Approved some time ago, the application has been reopened due to revised cost estimates. I have been approached by interested parties on both sides of the pipeline approval question to support their stance. As the pipeline is traveling through, and will be utilized in a portion of my district, Addison-4, I felt it would be right to let people know how I felt about the issue.

Editorial: A practical call by Shumlin

Posted on June 15, 2015 |
By Angelo Lynn

In the week after Gov. Peter Shumlin’s surprise announcement that he would not seek a fourth term for governor, you could characterize the reactions in two camps: those who thought he made the decision because he didn’t want to lose what would be a tough contest, and those who were surprised he didn’t fight for a fourth term to cement his legacy on several key issues.

Guest editorial: No easy solution for Iraq but more boots on the ground is not the anwer

Posted on June 10, 2015 |
By Haviland Smith

Much of northwestern Iraq is now under ISIS control. Shia Iraq is losing its war with Sunni ISIS. Hawkish American conservatives and neocons demand that we re-invade that country and solve its problems. Others less bellicose tell us that we must increase our military presence there to the tune of about 1,000 troops, concentrating on advising the Iraqis on how to beat ISIS. Moderates generally are not eager to see any U.S. military involvement in the region, preferring to let the antagonists work out their own problems.

Editorial: Finding virtue in adversity

Posted on June 8, 2015 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

Bill Finger tells a cautionary tale of the railway construction that will tear up Middlebury’s downtown, starting in the spring of 2016.  It is a tale of adversity that must be overcome. The challenge, he posits in a story on Page 1, is how well we manage that adversity.

Voters send message, schools respond with difficult choices

Posted on June 3, 2015 |
By Angelo Lynn

Back on March 3, voters in Bristol and Vergennes sent clear messages to their respective union high school school boards to reduce school spending further than the budgets proposed at Town Meeting. Boards trimmed a little, but in subsequent votes in April, voters again rejected the Mount Abraham Union High School, as well as the VUHS budget. After further reductions in both budgets, voters go to the polls next week for a decisive third vote.

Recent state budgets have been paying costs forward

Posted on June 3, 2015 |
By Angelo Lynn

When Governor Shumlin signed the $616 million transportation bill last week, he punctuated a hallmark of his administration: continued long-term investment in the state’s infrastructure that will lay the foundation for a better economy long after he has left office. The same could be said of gains made in early childhood education, cleaning up Vermont’s waterways and Lake Champlain, investing in renewable energy programs, aggressively addressing the state’s drug crisis and on and on.

The transportation bill is a case in point.

Editorial: Stowe ranked No. 1, but where is Addison County?

Posted on June 1, 2015 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

If you missed the recent release of U.S. News and World Report’s rankings of the top high schools across the nation, you missed that Stowe High School was rankedNo. 1 in Vermont and No. 296 in the nation.

You also missed that the rankings considered standardized test scores, college readiness and teacher-student ratios as the criteria for the magazine’s selection. Fifteen high schools in Vermont were ranked as Silver Medal schools. Stowe, with 399 students, was the only Vermont school to receive a Gold-Medal ranking.
