Guest editorial: Consolidation is a first step

If nothing is done, Vermont lawmakers will approve a seven-cent increase in the statewide property tax rate, which would be the largest increase ever imposed to fund our schools.

That’s not likely. The governor has promised the increase would be less. The House Ways and Means Committee has already proposed a plan that would cut the increase to five cents.

If Vermont Gas Systems thinks it has had a rocky time with Phase I of the Addison County pipeline project, running from Colchester to Middlebury, they might want to reconsider their strategy for the next leg of the project. With Phase II, it’s going to get much worse.

Following 34 school budget defeats across the state on Town Meeting Day, the most since 2003, Gov. Peter Shumlin displayed an uncharacteristically tin ear Wednesday by suggesting school budgets woes rested in the hands of local residents.

Editorial: A 'Yes' vote on Article 6 also supports tomorrow's prosperity

By Angelo S. Lynn

If you’re a Middlebury resident, when you get your Australian ballot on Tuesday, March 4, vote “Yes” on Article 6.

Here’s why:

• It is the best plan Middlebury has seen in 20-plus years of trying to resolve this issue. For 2 cents on the tax rate, the town would get a $7.5 million value. From a taxpayers’ perspective, that’s money well spent on a town building we all know needs significant renovation.

By Angelo S. Lynn

When choosing a candidate for the three available seats open on the Middlebury Board of Selectmen, voters might ponder what individual qualities are most effective in that role: In our mind, strong leadership skills, a rational approach to problem-solving, and working well as a team are three of the more important strengths a candidate must have to be effective.

The Page 1 story on about the Russ Sholes Senior Center presents opportunities to better serve that segment of Middlebury’s population in the years ahead.

The shocking news is the diminished active members of the group. At its current weekly luncheons only a dozen or so seniors routinely attend, with a larger group showing up monthly for a lunch that also features entertainment.

In the past several months, opponents to moving the municipal building and athletic facility in Middlebury to its proposed new sites have zeroed in on a few alleged faults of the plan. In each case, those allegations have been proven wrong.

Here’s a brief rundown of those issues as they apply to Article 6 that Middlebury residents will vote on by Australian ballot on March 4:

Editorial: Vote 'Yes' on UD-3 lease of land for town rec building

Posted on February 20, 2014 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

Voters of the seven-town UD-3 school district will decide next Tuesday whether it is prudent to lease 2.5 acres of land to the town of Middlebury on which to site the town’s municipal gym. The UD-3 board earlier endorsed the project, which would also include a $400,000 bond vote for a 2,000-square-foot addition onto the building to be used for Middlebury Union High and Middle School sporting events.

Guest editorial: Having skin in the game

By William J. Mathis

This week’s writer is William J. Mathis, managing director of the National Education Policy Center and a Goshen resident. He served as a Vermont superintendent of schools and taught education finance at the University of Vermont.

The school funding debate is particularly toasty this town meeting season. With some reason! Most observers agree that our per pupil education costs are among the highest in the nation. When compared to inflation or portion of the gross state product, however, the increases are much more modest.

Editorial: Facts a casualty in town office building discussion

Posted on February 13, 2014 |

As with any controversial issue, facts are a casualty of passionate debate. That’s frequently been the case with the discussion over the proposed bond for a new municipal building in Middlebury.

Let’s clarify a few points that we’ve seen distorted in the past few weeks:
