ADDISON — Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department staff will lead an evening bird-watching paddle at the Dead Creek Wildlife Management Area in Addison, on Wednesday, Sept. 26 from 5 to 7 p.m.

The group will set out in canoes and kayaks hoping to catch a glimpse of the many bird species that are present at Dead Creek during the fall bird migration. Participants must bring their own canoe or kayak, paddles, and life jackets.

Most folks who’ve enjoyed a dip in the local swimming hole — whether at a pond, lake, or river — have probably found, on occasion, a leech or two stuck to their skin while toweling off afterwards. Although some might think these slimy little suckers are gross, they mean — and do — no harm. They’re just hungry.

Control devices on beaver dams aim to stop flooding

MONTPELIER — To prevent flooding on nearby roads, the Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department recently completed construction of 19 water control devices on beaver dams in locations throughout Vermont. Known as ‘beaver baffles’ these devices allow some water to pass through the dam without breaching the dam and destroying the wetland.

First goose season set for September 1-25

MONTPELIER — Vermont’s resident Canada goose hunting season will be held Sept. 1-25 to help control Vermont’s resident Canada goose population prior to the arrival of Canada geese migrating south from Canada announced Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department.

The season will be open statewide with a daily bag limit of five Canada geese in the Connecticut River Zone and eight in the rest of Vermont.

Biologist: Humans are cause of bear problems

MIDDLEBURY — Bears aren’t the problem — you are.

This was the gist of the presentation given Wednesday evening by Forrest Hammond, a bear biologist for Vermont Fish & Wildlife, to a crowd of locals concerned by the spate of recent bear sightings around the area. About 70 people crowded the Middlebury Town Offices for the talk, which covered the biology and behavior of the Eastern black bears that call Addison County home — and what we can do to mitigate their encroachment into our backyards.

Citizen scientists needed to monitor Vermont's turkey broods

MONTPELIER — Wild turkeys are found throughout most of Vermont. To help make sure that the flocks are healthy and well managed, their reproductive success is monitored annually by the Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department with help from “citizen scientists” who report the number and size of turkey families they see during August.
