BARRE — One of the many fans of the Vergennes Union High School boys’ basketball team at the Barre Auditorium on Saturday held up a “Vermont Strong” sign before the Commodores’ Division II title game vs. Mount St. Joseph.

The Commodores were Vermont Strong this winter, defeating every D-II team they played except MSJ, which earned the D-II title by besting VUHS, 56-48.

VERGENNES — The visiting Mount Abraham Union High School boys’ basketball team played what its coach said was probably its strongest effort of the winter on Thursday, but it wasn’t quite enough to derail the No. 1 team in Division II and the Eagles’ No. 1 rival, Vergennes.

The Eagles led by seven late in the third quarter, but saw the Commodores go on a 16-4 run on the way to a 59-47 victory.

VERGENNES — A few lucky students at Vergennes Union High School laid down their pencils and math books on Monday for a special assembly in the middle school gym.

BRISTOL — Usually when the Vergennes and Mount Abraham union high school boys’ basketball teams meet, the records can be thrown out — the games are competitive regardless of how well the Commodores and Eagles are faring.

But Tuesday’s game at Mount Abe was the exception that proves the rule.

The 11-1 Commodores picked that night to put forth what might have been their most complete effort of the season against their 1-10 rivals and coasted to a 58-32 victory.

MIDDLEBURY — One team is improving, and the other, while talented, remains shorthanded.

The first time the two met came on Sept. 13, when the host Vergennes Union High School soccer team — that would be the shorthanded group — broke open a close game in the second half and dealt Middlebury a 4-0 setback.

The second time came on Tuesday, when the improving Tigers held the fort, dodged a couple second-half bullets, and scored early in overtime to avenge that loss, 1-0.
