Many artistic endeavors start in a studio, but basket-weaver Tamara Wight begins her creative process outdoors. On walks through the forest and along Sunset Lake in Brookfield, Vt., her home town, Wight gathers rocks, pebbles and interesting pieces of wood.

She takes these ingredients home and holds onto them until she has a moment of creative inspiration, usually during the night. Then, the rocks and branches become the foundation for her baskets, many of which are on display at Creative Space Gallery in Vergennes.

VERGENNES — With little comment, proposed new Vergennes zoning and subdivision regulations that would, among other things create Solar Energy Overlay District, took another step forward at the March 27 city council meeting.

The council on Tuesday held the first of at least two required hearings on the proposed amendments, which would also ban street-level and basement apartments in the downtown business district and make another 20-plus changes, many minor but some significant.

Posted on March 29, 2018 |
By Andy Kirkaldy

VERGENNES — City Manager Mel Hawley at Tuesday’s Vergennes City Council meeting read a 600-word statement addressing the December complaint filed against him by a downtown business owner.

The statement, technically a memorandum addressed to the council, detailed why Hawley believed his specific actions outlined in the complaint — such as copying City Clerk Joan Devine with email correspondence and making sure that a privately organized effort to install holiday lights on the city green was properly insured — were appropriate.

Northern Daughters gallery in Vergennes welcomes “Everything All Together,” a solo exhibit of large scale oil paintings from Hannah Secord Wade. The exhibit features Wade’s newest work from her current project. Wade’s loose gestures and repeated color palette create a visually pleasing body of work.  Arranged on a consistent horizon her work is composed of recognizable elements, seemingly discarded from a still life, and unrecognizable bits that are blurred or partially buried.
