Vergennes Police Log: City police arrest two Northlands students on drug charges

VERGENNES — Vergennes police arrested two Northlands Job Corps students last week in what they said were related drug cases.

On March 5 police cited Daniel R. Jetty, 19, of Northville, N.Y., for possession of marijuana. Police said Jetty had in his possession 27 individually wrapped bags of marijuana, and that he was lodged in the Marble Valley Correctional Center.

Vergennes Police Log: Vergennes man cited for DUI

VERGENNES — Vergennes police on Jan. 2 cited a city man for driving under the influence of alcohol, an action taken after they received a phone call from a citizen alleging the man had offered the caller alcohol while both drivers were stopped at a stop sign.

Police said they saw a gold Honda Pilot fitting the description provided by the caller on Route 7 north of Vergennes, and then followed the vehicle before stopping it on Main Street.

Vergennes Police Log: Vergennes man charged in jewelry theft

VERGENNES — Vergennes police on Dec. 28 charged a city man with stealing jewelry, much of it antique, from a family member at a Mountain View Lane home.

Cited was Nicholas Piper, 33, for grand larceny; police said they questioned him after the theft. Police allege that he stole jewelry that the victim estimated was worth between $5,000 and $10,000 and said that they recovered many of the items from pawnshops in Burlington and South Burlington.

Federal grant to help Vergennes hire another police officer

VERGENNES — The city of Vergennes has been awarded a federal Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) Grant worth $133,313 that will fund a sixth full-time member of the city’s police department for the next three years.

City Manager Mel Hawley said a condition of the grant is that Vergennes must agree to retain the position for at least one more year, meaning that the city force will expand for at least four years.

Vergennes honors men in blue

VERGENNES — At Tuesday’s city council meeting, Vergennes Police Chief George Merkel honored several members of the city police department, and he and City Manager Mel Hawley swore in the newest member of the Vergennes force.

With two dozen of their family members looking on, Merkel praised all of the department’s officers for their willingness to work any hours and accept any duties he asked of them, and for their ability to create “peaceful resolutions” when faced with difficult situations.
