BREAKING NEWS: Officials set bridge demolition date

ADDISON — New York and Vermont transportation authorities have tentatively set Wednesday, Dec. 23, as the date on which an Idaho-based company will demolish the Champlain Bridge.

Details were still being firmed up on Friday morning.

New design favored for Champlain Bridge

ADDISON — A modified, tied-arch bridge has emerged as the leading replacement design from among six conceptual options for a new Champlain Bridge.

New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) officials unveiled those six design options at a series of public hearings in Ticonderoga, N.Y., last Saturday. The options included a using a long-span steel girder bridge; a segmental concrete bridge (cast-in-place or pre-cast); a steel composite cable-stayed bridge; a concrete extra-dosed bridge; or a network tied-arch bridge.

Idaho company selected to demolish bridge

ADDISON — The New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) confirmed on Friday that an Idaho-based firm has been picked to demolish the Champlain Bridge, and that the event will be publicized for safe viewing.

In other related news, work continues on a new ferry service that is being established just south of the Champlain Bridge, and Addison County Transit Resources (ACTR) has given more than 2,000 rides to commuters seeking alternative routes across or around the lake since the 80-year-old span closed to traffic on Oct. 16.

ADDISON — Transportation officials have yet to set a specific date for the demolition of the Champlain Bridge, but its impending destruction is looming as perhaps the most keenly anticipated event in Addison since the day 80 years ago when a veritable who’s who of New York and Vermont politicians, businessmen and area residents marked the grand opening of the span on Aug. 26, 1929.

Lawmakers seek $1M in bridge aid

ADDISON — State and local lawmakers on Tuesday urged Gov. James Douglas to dedicate $1 million in federal stimulus funds to help Addison County businesses — including farms — that have taken a financial hit since the Champlain Bridge was closed on Oct. 16.

Douglas quickly endorsed the $1 million request, but said the money should be spent in the broader context of statewide, $8.6 million economic development package that includes some initiatives the Legislature rejected last session.

More bridge beams to move through Middlebury

MIDDLEBURY — Traffic interruptions will take place on Middlebury’s Merchants Row beginning Monday, Nov. 30, to accommodate the ongoing transport of huge, Cross Street Bridge-related beams through town.

The massive concrete beams — ranging in length from 65 feet to 110 feet — were made at J.P. Carrara & Sons and must be trucked, with escort, through downtown Middlebury at various intervals through Friday, Dec. 4.

Rt. 7 upgrades begin in Brandon

BRANDON — After years of planning, hoping, pleading and waiting, work on the long-delayed Route 7 reconstruction project in Brandon has begun with Segment 5.

Early last week, a large, electronic Vermont Agency of Transportation (VTrans) message board was placed on the curve of Park Street and Center Street near the Congregational Church in Brandon, warning southbound motorists that work is under way.

But while everything is in place and some crews are busy on the southern end of the Brandon village, the majority of the work won’t begin until the spring construction season.

Cross St. Bridge beams to roll through downtown

MIDDLEBURY — Peak fall foliage is long gone, but folks traveling through downtown Middlebury during the next few weeks will see quite a sight in the form of a major man-made attraction that, unlike the changing leaves, won’t return next year.

Vehicles bearing huge concrete beams — ranging in size from 65 feet to 110 feet long — were scheduled to wind their way on massive trucks through portions of the downtown on their way to the new Cross Street Bridge site on Nov. 19 and 20, and again on Dec. 1, 2, 3 and 4.

Ti Ferry extended through December 31

ADDISON — One Lake Champlain ferry will extend its run through the end of the year while another will pare back hours as New York and Vermont transportation officials continue to work on a temporary ferry service and explore the viability of a temporary span near the site of the closed Champlain Bridge.

Owners of the Ticonderoga Ferry confirmed this week that they will continue their extended run — weather permitting — from Shoreham to Ticonderoga, N.Y., through Dec. 31.

Bridge replacement set at $67 million

ADDISON — The cost for replacing the Champlain Bridge will be a minimum of $67 million and take at least 22 months to build, according to a preliminary report released last week by an engineering firm for the New York State Department of Transportation.

The assessment by HNTB New York Engineering and Architecture also analyzed the pros and cons of providing a temporary fix for the 2,187-foot span, and of rehabilitating the 80-year-old landmark.
