Flu vaccine shortages end

ADDISON COUNTY — After months of delays, local pharmacies and health care organizations are reporting that more supplies of the seasonal and H1N1 “swine” flu vaccines have finally trickled into the county.

Though public concern over the H1N1 flu seems to have died down in the wake of the October and November surge in illness, epidemiologists are predicting that another spike in illnesses could hit in a few months, and health care workers are encouraging patients to be immunized against both strains of the flu.

H1N1 cases beginning to dwindle

ADDISON COUNTY — The hospital and doctors’ offices in Addison County are enjoying the calm after the storm, after the number of cases of the H1N1 “swine” flu has reportedly tapered off over the last two weeks.

Vermont Health Commissioner Wendy Davis last week said the swine flu outbreak appeared to be waning in the state, though she warned that the illness could return in another wave and urged “high risk” patients to get vaccinated.

Still, the flu virus is keeping county healthcare providers — especially family practices and pediatricians’ offices — plenty busy.

Hundreds line up for first H1N1 vaccine clinic

MIDDLEBURY — Outside of the Middlebury American Legion post on Boardman Street, people began lining up as early as 8 a.m. on Tuesday for the state’s first public H1N1 vaccine clinic, which drew hundreds from all over Vermont to Middlebury in search of the vaccine.

But at least 150 people were left out in the rain when the clinic — armed with just 300 doses of the H1N1, or “swine flu,” vaccine — swiftly ran out of the product. Between 450 and 500 people were estimated to have turned out for the event, some coming from as far away as Montreal.

Vaccines trickle in as swine flu hits schools

ADDISON COUNTY — Earlier this week, around 300 students at Mary Hogan Elementary School in Middlebury lined up for the H1N1 influenza vaccine, as some of the first doses of the vaccine trickled into Vermont.

The clinic came after last week’s announcement from the Vermont Department of Health that H1N1, informally dubbed the “swine flu,” had reached widespread levels in the state. This increased level of illness had been slower to hit New England than other parts of the country.

Flu activity in Vermont reaches "widespread" level

An update just rolled in from the Vermont Department of Health: The department has confirmed cases of H1N1 influenza in all regions of the state, and increased levels of influenza-like illness are being reported in most regions.

Vermont will report “widespread” influenza activity for the week ending Oct. 17 to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Most U.S. states (41) have already reported widespread activity levels.

That "widespread" activity was slower to hit New England than other parts of the country.

No cases of swine flu at college

MIDDLEBURY — So far, despite rumors to the contrary, Middlebury College has seen no confirmed cases of the H1N1 virus this year.

That’s according to Dr. Mark Peluso, the director of the college’s health center. Peluso said the school is seeing some cases of “influenza-like” illness, but none of the samples the college has sent to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have tested positive for the swine flu.

Vermont clinics hit by flu vaccine delay

ADDISON COUNTY — Kim Farnsworth, who works in the front office at Mountain Health Center in Bristol, said the phones have been ringing off the hook with patients trying to track down a dose of the seasonal flu vaccine.

But right now, the clinic has bad news for those patients: Mountain Health Center, like many organizations in Addison County, still hasn’t received any shipments of the seasonal flu vaccine, let alone the H1N1 swine flu vaccine. So Farnsworth is taking down names and phone numbers, and she’s telling patients that the clinic will call when they can schedule flu shots.

County, schools brace for swine and seasonal flus

ADDISON COUNTY — Every year in the United States, anywhere from five to 20 percent of the population gets the flu, and more than 200,000 individuals are hospitalized from complications from seasonal flu.

But the buzz this year isn’t about the seasonal flu. It’s about the flu caused by the H1N1 virus, which was first detected in individuals in the United States in April. In June the World Health Organization signaled that a pandemic of the novel H1N1 flu was under way.

Flu closes Shoreham school early

SHOREHAM — Students at Shoreham Elementary School got their summer vacation off to an early start this year — not to go out and enjoy good weather, but rather because a good number of kids were under the weather.

When around five students in the fifth-grade class exhibited flu-like symptoms on Thursday, June 11, school officials — in consultation with the Vermont Department of Health — decided to release that entire grade for summer vacation.

Vermonters prepare for possible spread of swine flu

ADDISON COUNTY — As reported cases of the swine influenza cropped up around the country, Vermont remained unaffected at midweek by the airborne, contagious disease that reached epidemic proportions in Mexico. Still, local and state officials said they were on the lookout for the disease should it spread, and one local high school stepped up precautions after a student trip returned from south of the border last week.
