Men's soccer falls on road

MIDDLETOWN — The Middlebury College men’s soccer team split two recent games, including dropping a key NESCAC contest at Wesleyan on Saturday, 1-0.

Middlebury, 8-4-1 overall and 5-4-1 in the NESCAC, will play a NESCAC quarterfinal playoff game on Saturday, with the time and location to be determined. The Panthers were set to conclude their regular season by hosting Plymouth State on Wednesday.

Middlebury women's soccer extends streak

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. — The Middlebury College women’s soccer team extended its unbeaten streak to 13 games on Saturday, but settled for a 1-1 tie at Wesleyan (2-6-5, 1-4-4 NESCAC). The Panthers (10-1-3, 8-1-1 NESCAC) are ranked No. 14 in NCAA Division III and had already clinched the top seed for the upcoming NESCAC tournament. They and will host a quarterfinal game this Saturday at a time to be announced.

ADDISON COUNTY — In Division II girls’ soccer playoff action late last week, No. 15 Middlebury pulled off a pair of upsets to reach the semifinal round, No. 5 Mount Abraham fell just short in a quarterfinal, and No. 9 Vergennes bowed out in the first round.

Men's soccer claims wins, extends streak

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury College men’s soccer team won a pair of recent games, a league game on the road and a non-league home contest, to run its winning streak to four straight. Middlebury is 7-3-1, 5-3-1 in NESCAC, a league record that as of Monday was good for second place in a tight race. The Panthers will play at Wesleyan on Saturday as they seek to nail down a first-round home NESCAC playoff game on Nov. 2.

Women's soccer squad clinches first in NESCAC

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury College women’s soccer team won two recent NESCAC contests to clinch first place in the league and home-field advantage throughout the league playoffs. The winner of the league postseason clinches an NCAA Division III tournament berth.

The Panthers (10-1-2, 8-1 NESCAC) are ranked No. 14 in NCAA D-III and are unbeaten since a 1-0 overtime loss at Amherst in their season opener. Middlebury returns to action this Saturday at Wesleyan, and will host a NESCAC quarterfinal on Nov. 2.

Boys' soccer: Tigers battle VUHS to 1-1 tie as season ends

VERGENNES — A hundred minutes of high school boys’ soccer ended up in a 1-1 tie on Saturday between host Vergennes and Middlebury as the regular season ended.

The 4-8-2 Commodores unofficially have earned Division II’s No. 10 seed, which the Vermont Principals Association was set to confirm early on Monday.

Girls' Soccer: Vergennes edges visiting Tigers 1-0

VERGENNES — The Vergennes Union High School girls’ soccer team got a late goal from Tea Kiefer on Friday to edge visiting Middlebury, 1-0, and apparently earn the No. 8 seed in Division II.

If that seed was made official when the Vermont Principals Association announced playoff pairings early on Monday, the 6-7 Commodores will host a playoff game on Tuesday or Wednesday afternoon, possibly vs. Springfield (6-7-1).

Boys' soccer wrap: Eagles, Commodores victorious

ADDISON COUNTY — In the final regular season games for local high school boys’ soccer teams, Mount Abraham defeated Middlebury, but lost its perfect season on Saturday; Vergennes won on the road; and Otter Valley dropped a home game.

The Commodores also hosted the Tigers on Saturday; see story.

The Vermont Principals’ Association will release Division II pairings on Monday. The Eagles had already clinched the top seed, while VUHS and OV will open on the road. MUHS (1-12-1) will not earn a D-I berth.
