STARKSBORO — The struggles of a Starksboro man in trying to navigate the Vermont Health Connect website are a snapshot of what the Shumlin administration faces while implementing the state’s new health care platform.

Jeff Keeney first attempted to sign up for health insurance for his family in early November, and he still hasn’t been able to complete his application. Exasperated, he fired off an email to Gov. Shumlin last week and copied a number of local lawmakers.

Opinion: Shumlin's health care actions have been unpredictable

Posted on November 18, 2013 |
By Bryan Young

Gov. Shumlin’s Oct. 31 announcement that he would delay the participation requirement for Vermont Health Connect by three months was a step in the right direction for households, like mine, that are being forced to participate in the exchange in 2014. MONTPELIER — Gov. Peter Shumlin on Thursday gave high marks to the 2013 General Assembly, a body that he said granted 90 percent of his education priorities and completed one of the most productive sessions “in years.”

“It was a very productive session,” Shumlin said during a phone interview with the Addison Independent. “I thought they got more tough things done than I’ve seen a Legislature get done in a first half of a biennium in many, many years. There is a lot to celebrate with Vermonters.”

By John Flowers

MIDDLEBURY — Gov. Peter Shumlin’s proposed redirection of $17 million from the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) program to help expand early child education programs drew some criticism at Monday’s Legislative Breakfast at the American Legion Post in Middlebury.

Shumlin’s proposal has come under fire from those who contend that reduction in the EITC benefit will hit low-income recipients the hardest.

Guest Editorial by Gov. Shumlin: From poverty to prosperity

Posted on February 14, 2013 |
By Gov. Peter Shumlin

As I travel around the state visiting with Vermonters, I am grateful for how well we are doing. Our unemployment rate is consistently among the lowest in the nation. We are coming out of the Great Recession in better condition than our neighbors.  Our revenues have rebounded by 27 percent since its depths. And we are fighting back from Tropical Storm Irene stronger than ever.
