Older Vermonters can prevent falls

BURLINGTON — As we get older, our bodies, our sense of balance, and gravity all seem to conspire to cause us to fall more frequently — sometimes resulting in injuries that have a long-term impact on our health and quality of life. Last month, more than three dozen people gathered in Montpelier to celebrate the 10th annual Falls Prevention Awareness Day, and to raise awareness of healthy aging strategies and activities available to older Vermonters. Governor Phil Scott declared September as Falls Prevention and Awareness Month.

Age Well offering senior meals in August

For the month of August, Age Well will be hosting special Restaurant Meals for seniors around Addison County. Here is a list of the upcoming Age Well senior luncheons:

HALFWAY HOUSE RESTAURANT — Route 22A, Shoreham. Wednesday, Aug. 9. Arrive after 11 a.m. Meal will be spaghetti with meatballs, vegetable, garlic bread, and dessert. Advanced reservations required. Flu shots mix with fun at Lincoln Halloween party

LINCOLN — Every October for 30 years, organizers at Weathervane Outreach in Lincoln have reached out to seniors (and to whoever walks through the door) to provide a listening ear, good food, a good laugh and a chance to rock an awesome costume at an annual Halloween party.

And, yes, there have also been blood pressure checks at the party since 1991 and flu shots since 1995.

The shocking news is the diminished active members of the group. At its current weekly luncheons only a dozen or so seniors routinely attend, with a larger group showing up monthly for a lunch that also features entertainment.

Sled dogs keep Addison man young

How long in life can you continue to pursue physically and emotionally demanding hobbies that have you outside in extreme temperatures, facing challenging and even dangerous scenarios?

The answer for Ed Blechner, dog sled driver of almost 40 years, is “as long as I can.”

Blechner, now 66, first got into dog sledding in 1975. “I was always interested in dogs in functional, non-traditional ways,” he says. With a parallel interest in winter camping, working with sled dogs seemed like a natural hobby to pursue.
