Brandon selectman tapped to fill town manager job

BRANDON — There’s been a major change in management in the town of Brandon.

After weeks of searching, the selectboard here agreed to accept the resignation of Richard Baker from the board and hire him as interim town manager.

Baker and Brandon resident Seth Hopkins were both interviewed for the job in executive session during a special selectboard meeting on April 19 before the board made its decision. Board Chair Devon Fuller said Baker was eminently qualified.

Ferrisburgh selectboard chair faces challenge for seat

FERRISBURGH — Addison County’s third-largest town has one two-person race to be decided on March 5 — and the chairwoman of the selectboard is the one facing the challenge.

After 12 years of service, longtime selectboard head Loretta Lawrence is squaring off against a two-time Democratic candidate for the Vermont House of Representatives, Arabella Holzapfel, for a three-year term.

Perlee withdraws from Bristol selectboard race

BRISTOL — The number of candidates running for the Bristol selectboard dwindled to two last week. Bristol Planning Commission member Kris Perlee withdrew his petition for his candidacy on the selectboard before the ballot was finalized at 5 p.m. Wednesday, after press time for the last issue of the Independent.

“Due to possible conflicts with planning commission, other commitments, and time with my family, I do not believe this is the best time for me to run,” Perlee said on Thursday.

Nuovo, Shashok returned to Midd board seats

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury residents on Tuesday voted to return incumbent selectboard members Victor Nuovo and Susan Shashok to office, and also added Gary Baker to the fold.

Nuovo (613 tallies) and Shashok (520) were the top vote getters in a five-way race for two three-year seats. Finishing out of the running were former Selectman Don Keeler (461 votes), Eric Murray (272) and Brian Bauer (239).

Baker was unopposed in his run for a one-year term, the balance of a term vacated by former Selectwoman Janelle Ashley.

Oliver retires after decades in town office

Middlebury budget set for 1.7 percent bump

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury residents on Jan. 17 will be asked to comment on a proposed 2012-2013 municipal spending plan of $8,417,735, representing an increase of 1.74 percent ($148,370) that would require a 1.8-cent bump in the local property tax rate.

The Middlebury selectboard recently approved the budget for public hearing after agreeing on a combined total of $116,443 in cuts and revenue adjustments since November, when they first began cobbling together a fiscal year 2013 spending plan.

Middlebury refines fire station design

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury Fire Department and Bread Loaf Corp. architects have put the last major touches on the design of a renovated and expanded Seymour Street fire station that will be put to the voters at Town Meeting Day in March as part of a $4.8 million bond issue.

The most dramatic design change, influenced by local residents and members of the Middlebury Design Advisory Committee, is the relocation of the new elevator shaft from the building’s exterior to its interior.

Bristol chairman silences a citizen

BRISTOL — When Bristol Planning Commission Vice-Chair Chico Martin refused to accept public comments from John “Slim” Pickens — the only citizen in attendance at the commission’s Tuesday meeting — Martin may have violated state law, according to Secretary of State Jim Condos and his deputy Brian Leven.
