Shumlin says Legislature laid foundation for new jobs

MIDDLEBURY — Gov. Peter Shumlin on Tuesday commended the 2012 Legislature for adopting initiatives he said place the state on a firm foundation for job creation, fiscal solvency and sustainable health care costs — in spite of the crippling effects of Tropical Storm Irene.

New Haven man to run for House

NEW HAVEN — Ed McGuire spent 18 years teaching math to Mount Abraham Union High School students before retiring in 2008.

Now McGuire, a New Haven Democrat, will be reaching out to many of those same, now-adult students to earn their votes as he embarks on a race for the Addison-5 House seat that represents the towns of Bridport, Weybridge and New Haven.

“I do know a lot of young people,” McGuire said on Monday, the official kick-off of his first foray into politics.

Acinapura will not seek re-election to Brandon House seat

BRANDON — It was with mixed feelings that Rep. Joe Acinapura, R-Brandon, officially announced this week he will not seek a fourth term in the Vermont House.

Local murmurs about the decision had been rumbling for months, and in an interview on the steps of Acinapura’s Park Street home Monday morning, the 73-year-old confirmed that he had made his choice some time ago.

Rutland newspaper publisher plans run for governor

RUTLAND — The former owner and publisher of theBrandon Reporter and Vermont Ski News and founder of the Vermont Ski Museum has announced his candidacy for the Republican nomination for governor.

Roy Newton, who publishes theLakeside News and the Rutland Sun, made the announcement on the campus of Castleton State College on April 25.

Sanders voices concern in Holley Hall

BRISTOL — Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., met with more than 130 Vermonters in Bristol’s Holley Hall last Sunday to discuss a range of issues, from health care to women’s rights. But the bulk of conversation centered on an eroding middle class, a need to raise incomes and a risk of leaving future Americans with a lower standard of living.

Rep. Dave Sharpe, D-Bristol, commended the U.S. senator for his persistence in addressing the country’s socioeconomic disparity.

Dates set for 2012 legislative breakfast series

ADDISON COUNTY — The Bridport Grange No. 303 and the Addison County Farm Bureau will launch the first in its annual legislative breakfast series on Monday, Feb. 6, beginning at 7 a.m. in the Bridport Grange Hall.

The legislative breakfast series has enjoyed a long tradition in Addison County, offering residents a weekly opportunity to personally meet with their state representatives and senators on legislation being debated in Montpelier. As has been the custom, the breakfasts will rotate between various public venues throughout the county.

Sanders offers his own jobs plan at Middlebury Labor Day event

MIDDLEBURY — U.S. Sen. Bernard Sanders, I-Vt., marked Labor Day with a sobering message for workers: Barring an abrupt change in the federal government’s economic policies, the nation’s unemployment problems will worsen and household incomes will go down.

Sanders made his remarks before a capacity crowd at Middlebury’s St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, an audience that had assembled for a Labor Day dinner and rally sponsored by the Vermont AFL-CIO and several other statewide union groups.

MIDDLEBURY — Former Gov. James Douglas may be retired from politics, but he has no problem staying busy.

The Middlebury Republican, now eight months removed from office, is settling into a new life that includes such luxuries as spare time, more time with his family, the ability to finally drive himself to places and the flexibility to dress-down if he wants to.

But old habits are hard to break.
