Middlebury Police Log: Fighting man, theft at college, verbal disputes occupy police

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police cited Joshua S. Cave, 35, of Leicester for aggravated assault, following a reported fight outside a Court Street residence on April 4. Police said the alleged victim sustained cuts and bruises.

In other action last week, Middlebury police:

•  Got medical help for a woman who was standing in front of the Seymour Street fire station on April 2 saying she was depressed and that she had taken around 80 Tylenol pills.

Police warn of debit card 'lockout' phone scam

MIDDLEBURY — Police in Middlebury are warning area residents to be wary of scammers calling this week.

On the afternoon of Wednesday, April 11, the Middlebury Police Department received numerous reports of Addison County residents receiving automated phone calls that said their debit cards were “locked,” according to Middlebury Police Sgt. Jason Covey. In each case the messages prompted the potential victims to enter their account number to “unlock” the debit cards.

Bristol teen found

BRISTOL — Bristol police have found the local teenager who was reported missing on Sunday.
Bristol Police Chief Kevin Gibbs said on late Monday afternoon that they had found 15-year-old Destyni Cassatt, whose family reported her missing after having last seen by on Sunday.
Police began a search Sunday, including sending officers around to knock on doors in her neighborhood.
Gibbs thanked the public for help in locating the teenager, but did not provide information about how or when she was found.

Police on lookout for a Bristol teen

BRISTOL — Bristol police are looking for a local teen who was last seen by her family on Sunday, April 8, and who family said is in need of her medication.

The girl’s name is Destyni Cassatt, 15, of Bristol. She was last seen in Bristol wearing a purple zip-up hoodie, jeans and sneakers. She was also sporting bright pink hair. Police have been searching throughout town for Cassatt, whom they currently describe as being in a “defiant” state of mind.

Plea filed in New Haven standoff

NEW HAVEN — A New Haven man on Monday pleaded innocent in Addison Country Superior Court (criminal division) to a felony charge of aggravated domestic assault with a weapon, stemming from his March 29 standoff with Vermont State Police that closed down Route 7 for more than seven hours.

Thomas Jerome, 51, was released following his arraignment on conditions that he not have any contact with his wife, with whom he had been arguing the night he allegedly sequestered himself in his Route 7 home, under the influence of alcohol, with a shotgun.

Vergennes Police Log: Call leads police to heroin discovery

VERGENNES — Vergennes police last month cited a New Haven resident for possession of heroin, and last week in a separate incident issued her three tickets after a traffic stop.

The more serious charge police filed against Stephanie Williams, 20, came on March 18 after a clerk at the Main Street Champlain Farms called police and reported two women were taking a suspicious amount of time in the store’s rest room.

Middlebury Police Log: Men barge into motel, demand money

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police investigated an alleged strong-arm robbery at the Blue Spruce Motel on Route 7 South on Friday, March 30. Police said three men entered the room of a lodger of the motel and demanded money. Police said the man gave the suspects more than $100 in cash.

Police have referred the case to Addison County State’s Attorney David Fenster.

In other action last week. Middlebury police:

•  Were informed that a car was struck while parked on Hillcrest Road on March 26.

Vermont State Police Log: Troopers busy with marijuana busts

ADDISON COUNTY — Between March 27 and April 2, Vermont State Police operating out of the New Haven barracks closed Route 7 for about 7 hours beginning at around 5:20 p.m. on March 29 while they negotiated with a drunken man who had a gun and was threatening violence. Ultimately, the man surrendered.

In addition, VSP reported only four other incidents during the week — three marijuana busts and a burglary at the county fairgrounds. Specifically, troopers:

Vermont State Police Log: Bottle thrower in Bristol cited for disorderly conduct

ADDISON COUNTY — On March 23 at about 11:45 a.m. Vermont State Police were notified of a 911 hang up call.

Through investigation troopers said they found that Jody Bartlett, 42, of Bristol had thrown a glass bottle out of his vehicle striking a neighbor’s mailbox; and that Bartlett continuously drove his vehicle past the complainant’s residence off Route 116 in Bristol honking his horn and yelling profanities.

Bartlett was cited to appear in Addison District Court to answer to the charges of disorderly conduct.

Middlebury Police Log: MUMS students cited for pre-class drug use

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police cited a juvenile for possession of marijuana at Middlebury Union Middle School on March 23. Police said a group of three students had allegedly smoked pot, consumed beer and smoked cigarettes prior to coming into school that day.

In other action last week, Middlebury police:

•  Took a drunken person with “medical issues” to Porter Hospital for evaluation on March 19.
