Vergennes Police Log: Information needed in hit-and-run

VERGENNES — Vergennes police are seeking information about a Sunday morning hit-and-run accident that injured two youths.

Police said a southbound car on Main Street struck a 12-year-old girl and 15-year-old boy as they were in the crosswalk at the Green Street intersection at 11:50 a.m.

The girl and boy were treated at Porter Hospital and released — the girl for injuries to her hip, abdomen, back and head, and the boy for scrapes and bruises to his arms and legs.

Thieves hit Bristol businesses

BRISTOL — Vermont State Police are investigating two separate incidents of grand larceny from this past week in Bristol — one at Four Hills Farm and another at Lathrop Forest Products — and they may have a suspect for the Four Hills theft.

The farm reported to VSP that three of its Honda ATVs were stolen early on Wednesday, Aug. 24, between the hours of 1 and 3 a.m. Although the farm family members initially told the police that four ATVs were stolen, they later realized that only three were missing.

Vermont State Police Log: Police say local man kicks pregnant woman

ADDISON COUNTY — A Ferrisburgh man landed in jail last Saturday after Vermont State Police cited him for domestic assault and endangering the welfare of a child.

Trooper Dempsey reported that on July 30 at about 8:30 p.m. Vergennes police conducted a motor vehicle stop that led to the discovery of a domestic assault that took place on Basin Harbor Road in Ferrisburgh. Dempsey alleged that investigation by VSP revealed that John Whiter, 32, of Ferrisburgh kicked his six month pregnant girlfriend in the head, causing her to lose consciousness and fall on the ground.

Middlebury Police Log: Police investigating complaints find a man dead in his home

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police cited Omar O. Jones, 23, of Middlebury for violation of an abuse prevention order, resisting arrest, and unlawful mischief, following an incident in The Centre parking lot of Route 7 South on July 28.

In other action last week, Middlebury police:

•  Were informed of the theft of two full gas cans from a Maple Court residence on July 26.

•  Cited Alan N. White, 30, of Middlebury for domestic assault following an alleged incident in the Lower Foote Street area on July 26.

Vergennes Police Log: City traffic stop leads to two arrests

VERGENNES — A Vergennes traffic stop resulted in the arrest of two Ferrisburgh residents on Saturday night.

At about 11 p.m. that evening Vergennes police pulled over a car that proved to have an unlicensed driver, and police ended up driving the operator to his home on Basin Harbor Road in Ferrisburgh.

When they arrived, police said a woman came out and accused the man of assaulting her. Vergennes police then called Vermont State Police, who have jurisdiction in Ferrisburgh, and VSP arrested the man, whom they identified as John Whitier, 32.

City council mulls funding source, site for police station

VERGENNES — Vergennes aldermen on Tuesday took another step toward a new police station, and heard for the first time a suggestion on how to pay for it without raising taxes.

Aldermen unanimously voted to ask City Manager Mel Hawley to study building a new station on city-owned land off Green Street, and they heard Hawley cite the Tower Fund as a way to pay for it.

Police, apartment managers face surge in Middlebury drug crimes

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police and managers of several local affordable housing developments are joining forces to fight what they say has been a recent surge in illegal drug activity.

Middlebury officials specifically identified John Graham Court as a neighborhood in which some residents — particularly young families — have been complaining about drug transactions.

Middlebury on watch for meth activity

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police are confronting a new drug threat — methamphetamine — that they fear could soon be joining prescription narcotics and heroin on the list of top illicit substances among addicts.

Methamphetamine, aka meth, is a highly addictive psycho-stimulant that can be injected, smoked or snorted. It is made from reducing, or cooking, some very common over-the-counter cold medicines that include ephedrine or pseudoephedrine, such as Sudafed.

Vergennes eyes land for police

VERGENNES — Vergennes aldermen at their April 12 meeting said they would like to retain the better of two building sites on a city-owned 8.13-acre parcel off New Haven Road as a possible future home for a new police station.

The Boys & Girls Club of Greater Vergennes has also been interested in the parcel, which was owned by the Vergennes ID school district and deeded to the city in 2010 when the ID board was dissolved per a citywide vote.

Bristol police cut proposed spending by 10.5 percent

BRISTOL — Voters in the Bristol Police District next month will weigh in a proposed budget for the 2011-2012 fiscal year that features a 10.5 percent cut in spending and would require 6.5 percent less money from taxpayers.
