Patchwork: Late July musing - hanging onto summer while heading toward fall

garlic.jpg

Yesterday the wind blew hot and surly across the tall field grasses. Today the high dog days of midsummer have pooled around my feet. It is still but for the drone of heat-loving insects and the intermittent warning of a robin, the hissing of a house wren, the drink-your-tea-tea-tea call of the Eastern towhee.

Kate's Garden mid-July 2011.jpeg

Moby Dick the woodchuck is back.

No, he is not an albino woodchuck. He just keeps resurfacing. At the moment, he looms larger than life in my tiny garden. I analyze the damage in the morning, raise my fist, and mutter epithets toward the sky — though he’s a groundhog. There’s no question I’d like to shoot him, but I can’t. We live in town.

a cause of gardening fatigue.jpg

My sister-in-law is about to come down with a bad case of mid-summer gardening fatigue. I can sense it creeping up on her — and many others — as it does every year right about now, just as the birds are quieting down from their early nesting hoopla, just as the sun hits its warm stride, just as vegetable gardens in New England reach their peak.

Barbara took a risk asking me to write a guest column in this fine gardening feature, so full of descriptions of abundance, beauty and delectability. I grew up in a gardening family, my mother a genius with flowers; my great grandfather an orchardist from Sicily.

Patchwork: The lovely lettuces

Freckles Lettuce.jpg

Believe it or not, my mother wanted me to carry a large head of lettuce for my bridal bouquet. “It would be beautiful,” she said, “I have always pictured it!” A head of lettuce is indeed a beautiful thing — in terms of color, texture, even form. But I managed to over-rule her on that detail.

Patchwork: Minding the gap - gardening in mid-June

gaps in the garden.jpg

I’m trying to break a bad gardening habit. I’m trying to resist the urge to over-plant, to stuff the vegetable beds to bursting point no matter how good it makes me feel.

You see, when visitors ask for a tour of my gardens, I do a lot of apologizing — for the small size of the zucchini plants, for the holes chewed in the tomatillo and cucumber leaves, for the broccoli beheaded by deer, sure, but really, I’m making excuses for the dark splotches of soil marring the beds.

Patchwork seasonal fare: rhubarb oatmeal and nettles

Fresh Rhubarb IMG_7202.JPG

From the garden and kitchen this spring we have two new favorite concoctions I have to share with you. The first, rhubarb oatmeal, we have eaten every morning for the past 10 days. It is so simple, and it is a pleasure to yield to cries of “Can we PLEASE have rhubarb oatmeal?!”

radicchio in raised bed.jpg

To the chagrin of our college-age sons who don’t enjoy change on the home front, we have just taken down an overgrown crab apple tree and added another bed to the vegetable garden. This means there is less lawn (a good thing), less room to kick a soccer ball (a good thing from my point of view, a bad thing from theirs), no place to hang the hammock (a very bad thing from their point of view, although neither of them will be home this summer to lie in it), and much more sun-kissed ground in which to plant additional vegetables (a very good thing).
