Midd Men's lacrosse falls to Tufts, 13-10

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury men’s lacrosse team on Saturday grabbed a 7-3 lead early in the third quarter, but a string of 10-unanswered goals by Tufts lifted the sixth-ranked Jumbos to a 13-10 win on Youngman Field in Middlebury. The Panthers’ record was 8-6, 4-5 in NESCAC, heading into Wednesday’s late home game against Williams, while Tufts was 12-1, 8-1 in the league.

Middlebury College softball posts four wins, four losses

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury College softball team held Rensselaer to no runs on just three hits as the Panthers (16-10) on Tuesday swept a pair of games from the Engineers (21-9) by scores of 3-0 and 1-0.

Middlebury was set to host St. Joseph’s (Vt.) in a doubleheader at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday.

The RPI wins came after the Panthers lost three to Williams this past Friday and Saturday and defeated Hamilton on Sunday.

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury College junior Christina Puccinelli, a captain for the Panther women’s tennis team, recently sat down with the college Sports Information Department for a question-and-answer session. The New York City native talked about why she chose to attend college in Vermont, how she balances of tennis and academics, and what is was like to face tennis legend John McEnroe on the court.

Men's lax wins twice, will host pair

HARTFORD, Conn. — The Middlebury College men’s lacrosse team won a pair of recent games to stretch its winning streak to five games, all on the road, and improve to 8-5 overall and 4-4 in NESCAC play.

The Panthers will wrap up their regular season with two home games. On Saturday at 1 p.m. Tufts (11-1, 7-1 NESCAC), ranked No. 6 in NCAA Division III, visits, and on Wednesday at 5 p.m. Middlebury will entertain Williams (7-6, 5-3 NESCAC).

In women's lax, No. 21 Colby tips No. 4 Middlebury

MIDDLEBURY — The visiting Colby women’s lacrosse team upset Middlebury on Saturday, 14-12, thwarting a late Panther rally by scoring twice in the final 2:16.

The Panthers, who entered the game ranked No. 4 in NCAA Division III, dropped to 9-2 with their first league loss and are 5-1 in NESCAC play. No. 21 Colby improved to 6-4, 2-4 NESCAC, by becoming only the second team to reach double figures in goals vs. the Panthers and scoring a season high against Middlebury.

Women's lacrosse takes three straight victories

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury College women’s lacrosse team won three times in the past week, including a key NESCAC victory at previously unbeaten Amherst, to improve to 9-1, 5-0 in league play.

The Panthers, who held all three foes to fewer than 10 goals and have only allowed as many as 10 goals once this spring, were ranked No. 4 in this week’s NCAA Division III poll. They will host NESCAC foe Colby, ranked No. 21, on Saturday at noon.

Panthers set track and field records at California meet

SAN DIEGO — The Middlebury College track and field teams concluded their trip to the West Coast on Saturday by competing in the California Collegiate Open, a meet featuring teams from all three NCAA divisions that was hosted by UC San Diego. The Panther women finished fifth out of 17 teams with 46 points, while the men were seventh of 14 with 67 points.

Panther men win three hoop games, move to No. 5 in ranking

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury College men’s basketball team won a pair of NESCAC home games this past weekend before hitting the road on Tuesday to earn a victory, the Panthers’ 11th straight.

The Panthers (19-3, 7-1 NESCAC) this weekend play at Hamilton (19-2, 6-2) and Amherst (14-7, 5-3) as their regular season wraps up. A Middlebury win at Hamilton will clinch first place and home court advantage for the NESCAC playoffs regardless of Saturday’s result. The Panthers are now ranked No. 5 in NCAA Division III.

Women's basketball splits road games

WATERVILLE, Maine — The Middlebury College women’s basketball team split two NESCAC road games this past weekend and stands at 16-6 overall and 5-3 in league play.

The Panthers’ regular season wraps up this weekend with home games on Friday at 7 p.m. vs. Hamilton (14-8, 2-6) and Amherst (22-0, 8-0) at 3 p.m. on Saturday. A win in either game will clinch fourth place and a home NESCAC playoff quarterfinal for the Panthers for the second time in two years.

Panther women's basketball team sweeps NESCAC foes

MIDDLEBURY — Depth, defense and ball movement helped the Middlebury College women’s basketball team sweep two visiting NESCAC opponents this past weekend as the Panthers opened league play.

Middlebury improved to 11-2 with the victories on Saturday over Wesleyan, 77-60, and Friday over Connecticut, 75-59.

In the games the Panthers’ bench outscored opponents’ substitutes by 64-32, they forced 44 turnovers and recorded 24 steals, and they assisted 37 of their 55 baskets.
