Keep away from bears on Chipman Hill

Posted on May 14, 2018 |
By Addison Independent

MIDDLEBURY — A bear with three cubs has a den in the Chipman Hill area, according to the Middlebury Police Department. The bear and cubs roam about the entire area, along the TAM, through DM Means Woods and Battell Woods and adjacent fields. Do not go near the bear, if seen. A sow tending cubs can be very aggressive and may cause injuries, while cubs have no fear and can appear playful. The bears will generally avoid human contact. Do not try to approach the bears or try to get close for a photograph. If encountered, leave the area immediately.

NHRAA cmyk anniversary founders New Haven River Anglers Association.jpg

BRISTOL — It began in 1981 as a group of avid anglers looking to share their love of the sport.

It’s evolved into a diverse collection of men, women and youths who not only share the common interest in fishing, but also in preserving one of the key natural resources in which they practice their sport.

It’s the New Haven River Anglers Association (NHRAA), which recently celebrated its 37th birthday.

The Outside Story: Porcupine salt cravings

Posted on April 16, 2018 |
By Susan Shea

The Outside Story Porcupine.jpg

When I was growing up, my family rented a vacation home on a mountain in southern Vermont. One night our dogs barking awakened us. Soon we heard a persistent gnawing on the outside of the house. My Dad went to investigate. His flashlight beam revealed a large porcupine with black, beady eyes. My father scared it away, but it returned other nights.

The Outside Story: Spider webs use intelligent design

Posted on September 15, 2014 |
By Rachel Sargent

The Outside Story.jpg

Imagine you’re an insect cruising through the air. Suddenly, you realize you’re heading straight for a spider web. You’re doomed. But wait — you can still escape by slipping through one of the gaps. Spider webs are, after all, more gaps than web. You aim between the sticky threads — it’s going to be a close call, but you’re going to make it.

Then, as you pass through, the threads snap towards you … and you’re a spider’s dinner.

The Outside Story: Coyotes' language of yips and howls still keeps secrets

Posted on April 7, 2014 |
By BRIAN R. MITCHELL

As the sunset colors fade from purple to black, the forest is dimly illuminated by a first-quarter moon. An eerie sound breaks the calm. It is not the long, low, slow howling of wolves that can be heard further north, but the group yip-howl of coyotes: short howls that often rise and fall in pitch, punctuated with staccato yips, yaps and barks.

Matt Dickerson: Gliding through a snowy wood

Posted on February 19, 2014 |
By Matt Dickerson

There is something about evergreens bent and laden under a thick quilt of fresh snow. Especially spruces and firs and hemlocks. To say it was a feeling of waiting would not be quite right. Waiting so often implies impatience. But the woods were not impatient. Rather it was a feeling of tranquility.

Plan floated to link famous hiking trails through county

Posted on May 31, 2012 |
By Andrew Stein

AltC-trail-alternatives-map.jpg

ADDISON COUNTY — For almost 50 years, naturalists, hikers and government officials have dreamed of blazing a trail that would connect two of the country’s longest hiking routes: the Appalachian Trail, which runs along the East Coast from Georgia to Maine, and the North Country Trail, which stretches from Crown Point, N.Y., to North Dakota.

The missing link?

A roughly 40-mile stretch of prospective trail through Addison County.
