This week’s writer is Gov. Jim Douglas, governor of Vermont from 2001 to 2011 and a Middlebury resident.

The demographic challenges facing Vermont have been a long time in the making. As governor, I was sounding the alarm over 15 years ago: Vermont must do what it can to attract and keep young people in our state.

Letter to the editor: Other amendments also give citizens important rights

The discussion about gun rights and mass murder focuses on the Second Amendment, but the Bill of Rights guarantees protections for all of us. The Ninth Amendment is of particular importance:

“The enumeration in the Constitution, of certain rights, shall not be construed to deny or disparage others retained by the people.”

Letter to the editor: 'Nurturant Parent' model better for care of the planet

George Lakoff points out that in the West there are two models of morality that can be represented as family metaphors. The Strict Father Model assumes that God gave dominion over nature to man “to steward wisely.” The Nurturant Parent Model sees nature as a Mother who provides for us.

Letter to the editor: Middlebury selectboard race winner thankful to voters

I am writing to thank Middlebury voters for supporting me in my bid for town selectboard. Thank you to everyone who voted. It was inspiring to see such a robust turnout in an “off” year. Thanks to everyone who took the time to introduce themselves on Election Day, and to everyone who stopped by to share their hopes, cares, and concerns for our town. I hope that will continue in the years ahead!

Editorial: State leaders off-base trying to change school finance now

School budgets across the state had a remarkable success rate this Town Meeting. Of 142 school districts facing budget votes on Town Meeting Day, 135 budgets were approved, two votes had yet to be tabulated as of mid-Wednesday, and only five were defeated. That 96 percent approval rate is one of the highest in recent times, making one question the wisdom of the Democratically controlled Legislature’s push for school finance reform.

Last week I saw an article claiming that, in living rooms all around the country, viewers were watching Olympic performances and saying to themselves, “I think I could do that.”

Really? I didn’t even feel that way when the games cut to a commercial for mopping.

I do stand in awe of the Olympic athletes, but I’ve never felt that I could be one. When a future Olympian is 8 or 9, their parents, recognizing the child’s potential, pack up the family, move to Colorado and build a regulation ski jump in the back yard.

Letter to the editor: Gun deaths a public health issue

The tragic massacre in Florida and Vermont’s own “near miss” in Fair Haven emphasizes that we continue to be caught up in an epidemic of gun violence. Over 33.000 people die in firearm related incidences in the US annually. In Vermont, 420 people died from gun-related violence in the period of 2011-2016, with many being the result of domestic violence and suicide. And yet, the same pattern repeats every time a tragedy occurs: Groups retreat to tired talking points that are created and promoted by vested interests.

Letter to the editor: Unification hasn't helped school

As a parent of three children under the age of eight, I have many years ahead of me in the public-school system, and consider myself fortunate to be able to send my kids to the same small community school that I went to at their age. As an Addison resident my whole life, community is of the utmost importance to me, and in such a rural town, our school is the center of that community. There’s nothing better in my opinion than watching my kids walk into school each day, knowing their needs will be met by people I know on a first-name basis and trust explicitly.
