Ladies Night Out to present a spring concert May 5

MIDDLEBURY/RUTLAND — Ladies’ Night Out Women’s Chorus will present spring concerts in Rutland and Middlebury on May 4 and 5. The program, “The American Songbag, Plus!” includes traditional American folk music, popular music from the 1940s and ’50s, and some other special “plusses” like “Jolene” by Dolly Parton and “Silvy” by Huddy Ledbetter (known as Lead Belly,) arranged with body percussion by Moira Smiley, and a beautiful arrangement of “Hard Times.”

John Hughes plucks and strums the kora in Shelburne

Sarah Blacker brings her full band sound to Brandon Music on Saturday, April 14 with New England Groove Association. With roots in the folk, rock, jam-band and funk scenes, the group fuses their vibrant musical worlds together to create an original, soulful sound.

The collaboration, which often features special guests, is comprised of award-winning, internationally touring singer-songwriters and multi-instrumentalists, Blacker and Aaron Z. Katz, and Phil Selesnick on keyboards.

Four veteran Vermont musicians joined together as Northern Flyer — a contemporary bluegrass band — in 2017. They combine first-rate harmonies with extensive instrumental expertise. Their repertoire includes original songs, unique adaptations of exciting material and traditional bluegrass. And they’re coming to Burnham Hall in Lincoln on Saturday, April 14, or the Burnham Music Series.

Together Andy Sacher (mandolin), Mark Struhsacker (guitar), Andy Greene (banjo) and Kirk Lord (bass) make up this bluegrass quartet you won’t want to miss on Saturday.

Pulitzer Prize-winning composer shares her work

The youngest recipient of the Pulitzer Prize for Music, composer Caroline Shaw will visit Middlebury College for a two-day residency, including discussions on blurring genre boundaries in music-making and the role of women in music. The New York-based musician — vocalist, violinist, composer and producer — performs in solo and collaborative projects.

Opera house opens stage to locals and legends this Saturday

Music enthusiasts won’t want to miss the show coming to the Vergennes Opera House this Saturday. Why? Well, first, audiences will get to enjoy music by the local funky jazz quartet “The Good Parts.” Then “Bear Tread” will take the stage, featuring Dave Hebert, formerly of the “Jerry Garcia Band” (until 2016), on guitar and vocals; and Greg Koerner, formerly of the “Dark Star Orchestra,” on bass. If you need one more reason, legendary drummer Kenwood Dennard will join Herbert and Koerner on stage this Saturday.
