BRISTOL — Close to 60 five-town residents gathered at Monday night’s meeting of the reinstated Mount Abraham Renovation Committee. It was overwhelmingly the largest draw of residents on the subject of what to do with the 49-year-old facility that houses Mount Abraham Union Middle/High School.

Although no final decisions were made — the evening was devoted to public input and collective brainstorming — there was one insistent takeaway for those who participated in the three hours of discussion:

BRISTOL — A group of citizens last Wednesday urged members of the Mount Abraham Union High School Board to delay any new bond vote on renovating the Bristol building until Town Meeting Day next March.

“The goal should be 60 percent voter participation with 60 percent voting yes,” said Bristol resident David Brynn, among non-board members in attendance.

ANESU voters reject $36 million Mount Abe building bond

BRISTOL — Addison Northeast Supervisory Union residents on Thursday rejected a $36.6 million renovation plan for Mount Abraham Union High School by a 1,261 to 1,168 tally.

The close, 93-vote margin of defeat has provided project proponents with a silver lining sense that a third vote could be the charm for getting five-town residents to endorse major repairs to their almost 50-year-old secondary school building.

BRISTOL — It’s lunchtime at Mount Abraham Union High School and the large cafeteria is abuzz with students eating, chatting, laughing and catching a few fun moments with friends before the next bell rings and they troop off to classes.

More than anything, it’s loud. Deafeningly so. But it’s a lively loud, with so many students happy to be out of class, get some food, sit with buddies and take a break.

MONKTON — Some citizens at Monday’s Addison Northeast Supervisory Union information session on a proposed $35 million school building bond were all for it. But a question about the cost to taxpayers proved to be a sticking point for some at the meeting.

Attendees wrestled with the statement by supporters of the Mount Abraham Union High School renovation plan that the proposed 2017 $35 million bond would result in a smaller tax increase than the proposed 2014 $32.6 million bond that voters defeated.

BRISTOL — “It’s a well-built school. It’s a steel-frame building. It’s got a brick façade to it. It holds its heat very well,” Alden Harwood said of the Mount Abraham Union High School, which opened to students in 1969.

“But it’s an old building. It’s a 1960s-vintage building that needs more than a facelift,” he cautioned. “We’re starting to see many things that are at the end of their useful life.”
